This was the central theme of an international
scientific conference held on 26 October 2017 at
the University of Economics in Katowice. The aim
of the conference was twofold: to create a forum
for exchange of views concerning the current challenges
facing the finance and accounting theory
and practice, and to tighten the cooperation
between higher education institutions and within
the whole scientific community.
As intended by the Organizers
– the Department of
Accounting at the University
of Economics in Katowice and
the Main Board of Accountants
Association in Poland –
the conference provided an
opportunity for Polish and foreign
higher education institutions
as well as business sector
representatives to present
their scientific achievements
and experience. Held under
the honorary patronage of the
Polish Chamber of Statutory
Auditors, the Polish Economic
Society, Deloitte and the Chartered
Institute of Management
Accountants, the conference
brought together more than
100 delegates from leading
higher education institutions
in Poland and abroad (including
those based in Belgium,
Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany,
Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands,
Spain and Ukraine).
Among those present were
also representatives of the
business sector and professional
associations.
The conference was opened
by Prof. Sławomir Smyczek,
Vice-Rector for Education and
Internationalization, followed
by Prof. Zbigniew Luty, Chairman
of the Main Board of
Accountants Association in
Poland, Prof. Andrzej Piosik,
Dean of the Faculty of Finance
and Insurance, and Prof. Józef
Pfaff, Head of the Department
of Accounting. Further on, four
parallel sessions were run both
in Polish and English, chaired
by Prof. Mariusz Andrzejewski
(Cracow University of
Economics), Prof. Ewa Śnieżek
(University of Lodz), Prof. Cristina
Florio (University of Verona)
and dr Joanna Błach (University
of Economics in Katowice).
The presented papers covered
a wide spectrum of issues
related to current problems
facing finance and accounting,
both locally and internationally.
The topics addressed during
the plenary sessions included,
among others, relevance
assessment principles and
problems related to accounting
valuation, integrated reporting,
economic and financial models
for fair value estimation, tax
issues facing enterprises, insurance
companies and banks.
The conference papers have
been published (or are still
undergoing the publication
process) in the following
