Research seminar
on City Development
Programming – learning
through practice
On 24–26 November 2017, students of the specialization
in City Development Programming attended a seminar
in Wisła, together with staff members from the Departments
of Strategic and Regional Studies and the Department
of Spatial and Environmental Economics.
City Development Programming (PRM),
a new specialization offered by the Faculty
of Economics and run by the Department
of Strategic and Regional Studies,
was launched in October 2017. The
initiator and supervisor for the specialization
program is Prof. Adam Drobniak.
The seminar in Wisła aimed to familiarize
the new group of students with various
perspectives on how cities operate
and the specific nature of work related
to city issues; it was meant as a followup
to the annual conference organized by
the Department of Strategic and Regional
Studies “New Economy Sectors in Urban
Development”. Beside the course run by
local government entities (“A project for
business practice”), the seminar is one of
the components of an educational program
aiming to develop students’ practical
skills of working in urban settings;
it also facilitates the implementation of
project approach based on interaction
between students and the tutor.
The seminar involved a presentation of
the PRM course curriculum, an economic
experiment, and a number of practical,
outdoor and integration activities. The
curriculum was presented by the teachers
of particular subjects, giving students an
opportunity to meet their future lecturers
and tutors, including Prof. Małgorzata
Czornik, Prof. Adam Drobniak, dr Marcin
Baron, dr Radosław Cyran, dr Piotr Gibas,
dr Artur Ochojski and dr Adam Polko.
The students also took part in an innovative
economic experiment, involving
examination of their potential to
engage in various initiatives related to
public space development. Based on
the assumption that local communities
should actively participate in choosing
which projects are to be implemented in
their cities, the experiment made it easier
for students to familiarize themselves
with the specifics of working for local
government entities.
The seminar program also included
a study visit around Wisła, enabling the
students to learn about the town and its
history as well as discuss the determinants
of the town’s development with
their tutors. This part of the event was
mentored by Prof. Czornik and dr Baron.
Mountain hiking enthusiasts enjoyed
climbing Mount Stożek, guided by Prof.
Drobniak. The seminar provided an excellent
opportunity to exchange knowledge
and experience between staff members
of the two cooperating departments and
their students. It also enabled the participating
tutors to find out about students’
professional interests, and facilitated integration
among the PRM students.
