and everyone is <strong>for</strong>bidden to bring to such places, or to market places in<br />

towns, or there to offer <strong>for</strong> sale, animals which be knows to be suffering fr<strong>om</strong><br />

such diseases. Furthermore the High Sheriff may . cause a general examination<br />

to be made by a Veterinary Surgeon, of all *d<strong>om</strong>estic animals of like species<br />

which may be threatened by contagious disease. The examinations should be<br />

effected in such a manner- that all opportunity of spreading infection thereby<br />

be avoided. The King, or the person authorized by him, may prescribe special<br />

precautionary measures to be observed in the transport of animals by rail or<br />

by vessels, on the outbreak of contagious disease amongst d<strong>om</strong>estic animals.<br />

Should any d<strong>om</strong>estic animal be attacked by any of the diseases named in<br />

2, or should there be any likelihood of their being attacked, its owner shall<br />

call in a qualified Veterinary Surgeon, or announce the fact, in towns to the<br />

Chief C<strong>om</strong>missioner of Police, in the country to the Head Constable of the<br />

district (Lensmand). Should the animal be found to be suffering fr<strong>om</strong> such<br />

(iisease, or that there is all probability that such is the ease, the diseased animal<br />

shall at once be separated fr<strong>om</strong> healthy animals, and the objects with which it<br />

has been in contact cleansed, so far as possible. Should the animal bave arrived<br />

fr<strong>om</strong> another district, the Chief C<strong>om</strong>missioner of Police, or the Head Constable<br />

therein must be in<strong>for</strong>med of the occurrence. The King, or the person authorized<br />

by him, may determine ail further regulations which <strong>for</strong> each individual<br />

disease may be deemed necessary to effect the c<strong>om</strong>plete isolation of the diseased<br />

animal, and the cleansing in connection with it.<br />

§ 5 .<br />

Should any suspicion "exist that the disease is cattle plague or pleuropneumonia,<br />

the High Sheriff may order one or several animals to be slaughtered<br />

in order that a greater certainty of knowledge concerning it may be gained fr<strong>om</strong><br />

an examination of the slaughtered beasts by a Veterinary Surgeon. Those<br />

auimals which, on the declaration of a Veterinary Surgeon, must be regarded<br />

as being attacked by one of the two diseases above mentioned, must, at the<br />

requirement of the High Sheriff, be slaughtered, unless the Government Depurtment<br />

mentioned in § 1, should order otherwise. The Department may also<br />

at the c<strong>om</strong>mencement of the disease, in any place in which it . appears, order<br />

the slaughtering of the entire stock in which the disease has broken out. Every<br />

horse which, according to the declaration of a Veterinary Surgeon, is attacked<br />

by glanders (as mentioned in § 2) must be destroyed. Provided the owner of<br />

those animals which shall thus be slaughtered should claim c<strong>om</strong>pensation <strong>for</strong><br />

them they shall, previous to slaughtering be appraised by an officer of Police<br />

(in the country by the Head Constable) together with two other men appointed<br />

by bim: The animals shall be awarded the value they would presumably bave<br />

had. when ,unaffected by the disease, but provided any use can be made of the<br />

slaughtered • beasts • the value obtainable shall be deducted fr<strong>om</strong> • the estimate.
