The calculations are sensitive to the following factors:<br />

Remaining life expectancy. As mortality has not been proved<br />
to be reduced after the epidemics it has been estimated that the<br />
remaining life expectancy is equal to the remaining life expectancy<br />
for the rest of the population. If the remaining life expectancy<br />
is lower it becomes more expensive to save an additional<br />
year of life.<br />
Influenza outside the periods of epidemic. It is only possible to<br />
roughly estimate the scope of the disease among the elderly<br />
during influenza epidemics. Influenza, which may cause admission<br />
to hospital and death and which may be prevented<br />
through vaccination, is found in the population all the year<br />
round. This may actually mean that the number of years of life<br />
saved through vaccination is higher, whereby the cost per year<br />
of life saved becomes lower than indicated in the table.<br />
If regime C (the Copenhagen regime), i.e. public vaccination clinics<br />
offering vaccination free of charge, could be established all over<br />
the country, this would be the most inexpensive solution seen from<br />
an economic point of view.<br />
In socio-economic terms regime D2 (general-practice vaccination;<br />
low rate) with a vaccination fee of DKK 94.63 would be superior<br />
to regime A (non-structured activities) as it would be possible to<br />
increase the vaccination rate significantly for the same amount.<br />
The precondition of this is that an agreement is made between<br />
Sygesikringens Forhandlingsudvalg (the Negotiation Committee<br />
of Public Health Security) and Praktiserende Lægers Organisation<br />
(the Organization of General Practitioners in Denmark). Increased<br />
costs for home visits to the homes of immobile elderly persons have<br />
not been included in the calculations. The Organization of General<br />
Practitioners in Denmark estimates that approximately 5 per<br />
cent of the persons over the age of 65 should be offered vaccination<br />
in their own homes.<br />
