Danish National Research Foundation and the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the
University of Copenhagen will be filled in the period 2005-2007. Prof. Boomsma is also
external supervisor for a PhD program (2005-2008) in “Naturalistisk etik”, based at the
Department of Philosophy of KU and funded via “Biocampus”.

belongs to the world’s top groups in the field of Population Biology (including Population
Ecology, Population Genetics, Evolutionary Biology, Animal Behavior).

1994-2001: 18.51 (47 articles)
Note: Citation rates in the field of Population Biology (including Population Ecology,
Population Genetics, Evolutionary Biology, Animal Behavior) are generally not very high
compared to for example Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Cell Biology. With the
average citation rates given above, CSE belongs to the world’s top groups in their field.

Note: Patent-oriented research is normally not pursued in the field of Population Biology,
but Collaboration with Novozymes for 1-2 new CSE PhD stipends is being discussed.
C.4 Samfundsmæssig betydning:
The question "How did Cooperative Behavior Evolve" was singled out in the 1 July 2005
issue of Science as one of the 25 big questions facing science over the next quartercentury.
In this research, the insect societies serve as important “null models” for
understandin g Social Evolution in vertebrate (including human) societies, as cultural
evolution plays no role. CSE researchers also contribute with practical advice on nature
conservation to Government Agencies, for example via two recent EU-ENV networks.
Research of CSE, KU has been frequently covered by the media (2002-2004: three
programs on Danish television, one on National Geographic channel, four radio programs,
ca. 50 newspaper articles in Denmark and abroad, ca. 25 newspaper and radio interviews,
three public lectures, 4 popular articles in Danish magazines).
CSE researchers at KU have examined 4 Ph.D. and 8 M.Sc.-students in 2002 – 2004.
