extent, the film collection reflects half a century
of non-commercial international film history and
the living history of a Berlin institution whose
structure is unique in the world.
A great number of people – internally and externally
– have participated in building up the collection
over the past decades. This is the only
way such a living impression of a century of international
film history could have emerged.
This is why we think that today a great number of
people from the field can bring in their own specific
perspectives to lead the collection in its
extremely unique self-perception from the present
to the future, keeping history in mind so as
to break with a linear understanding of time.
The “Living Archive – Archive Work as a Contemporary
Artistic and Curatorial Practice” project
began in June 2011. 37 curators, filmmakers, artists
and other researchers, plus grant holders
from India, South Africa, Jordan, Brasil and
Canada were invited to develop projects around
the archive holdings. The idea was to consciously
initiate projects that would carry out archival
work as part of their development, so as to link
research, preservation and publication in the
context of contemporary curatorial and artistic
practice. These are film programs, retrospectives,
exhibitions, books, DVD editions, new films
or videos, installations, performances, sound
works, conferences. Living Archive thus represents
the attempt to undertake archival work
that does not serve self-preservation only but is
contemporary, creates something new and enables
new approaches.
Throughout the month of June, the participants
of the project will present the results of their research
at the Arsenal and at KW Institute for
Contemporary Art.
