In conversation classes teachers normally get
their learners to take part in speaking activities
such as role plays, information gap activities
or sharing personal information. Learners
undoubtedly ‘practise speaking’ in such lessons.
However, they do not always make progress
in being able to take part in real conversation,
because successful conversation in English
depends on using a number of hidden ‘rules’.
What are the hidden rules and how can we
teach them? We will explore the nature of real
conversation in English and look at ways of
explicitly teaching conversational skills. Everyone
should go home knowing some procedures and
techniques that will enable them to help their
learners converse well in English.
