Bradn Burkle war auch in der Gruppe, er hat das Foto
von Gleb und mir gemacht. Bradn ist Amerikaner, Pastor
der Evangelisch-lutherischen Kirche in Amerika. Er
studierte Theologie und Russisch, kam zum Studium
der russischen Sprache nach Russland und entdeckte
dort, dass er in der lutherischen Kirche Russlands sein
Vikariat machen konnte. Später wurde er Dozent am
theologischen Seminar der lutherischen Gesamtkirche
in Russland. Als seiner Kirche in den USA das Geld für
seine Stelle ausging, haben wir vom ELM ihm eine
angeboten; er ist jetzt Pastor der Gemeinde in Novosibirsk,
in der bis vor einem Jahr das Pastorenehepaar
Fendler tätig war. Mit seiner Erfahrung steht er grade
auch jungen Kollegen wie Gleb zur Seite, die er schon
aus der Zeit kennt, als sie noch vor ihm auf der Schulbank
saßen.
Ich bin absolut gelassen: Unsere Partner in der Mission
werden nicht untergehen, wenn aus dem Missionsseminar
keine deutschen (!) Missionare mehr kommen.
Für die Aufgaben, für die unsere Partner Personal von
uns erbitten, finden wir die Leute und außerdem gibt
es so viele charismatische einheimische Missionare
und Missionarinnen, die wir weiterhin nach Kräften
unterstützen. Denn wir wissen: Sie kennen die Sprache,
sie sind in den kulturellen Besonderheiten ihres
Landes Zuhause, sie können das Evangelium in passender
Weise in den Alltag ihrer Landsleute bringen.
Deshalb mache ich mir um die Weitergabe des Evangeliums
bei unseren Partnern in Mission keine Sorge.
In einem anderen Bereich aber sorge ich mich schon
und der hat mit den zwei Dritteln Nichtchristen zu
tun, die der Briefschreiber vom Anfang wie eine dunkle
Wolke an den Missionshimmel malt. Denn hier sind
die „Glaubensfronten“ bei unseren Partnern – und
auch bei uns in Deutschland – oft verhärtet und
unversöhnlich – sowohl bei Christen wie zum Beispiel
auch bei Muslimen in Afrika, Hindus in Indien
oder Atheisten in Russland. Jürgen Klein, der sich im
Auftrag unserer äthiopischen Partnerkirche für die
Verbesserung der Beziehungen zwischen Christen und
Muslimen einsetzen soll, hat da ähnliche Erfahrungen
gemacht, wie ich in der Zentralafrikanischen Republik.
Immer wieder stoßen wir – sowohl in der theologischen
Ausbildung wie auch bei der Laienfortbildung
und in der Gemeindearbeit – auf eine gefährliche Form
der prinzipiellen Ablehnung des anderen Glaubens.
Selbst wenn man ausführlich die Entstehungsgeschichte
des Islam erläutert hat, die Aussagen von
Koran und Bibel verglichen hat; selbst wenn man sich
große Mühe gibt, zu Respekt vor Menschen anderen
Glaubens einzuladen: Immer wieder wird man hinter-

Lutheran Church in America. He studied theology
and Russian, came to Russia for his language studies,
and discovered there that he could do his internship
in the Russian Lutheran church. Later he became a
lecturer in the theological seminary of the Lutheran
churches of the whole former Soviet Union. When his
home church lacked the funds for his position, we in
ELM offered to hire him; he is now the pastor of the
congregation in Novosibirsk in which the Fendlers
worked until last summer. With his great experience
he is of particular help to the young colleagues (like
Gleb) whom he knows from the time when they were
his students.
Now isn‘t that comforting? Our Partners in Mission
will not drown when no more (German!) missionaries
come out of the Mission Seminary, and if our partners
ask us to send them personal, we do find the people.
Furthermore there are many charismatic local missionaries
which we will continue to support. For we
know: They know the language, they feel at home
within the cultural setting of their country; they know
how to bring the gospel to their people’s everyday life
in an appropriate manner.
Therefore I am not worried about the furthering of the
gospel at our partners in mission. But there is another
area of concern that has to do with the two third who
are not Christians, mentioned by the letter-writer
from the beginning. Because here the “frontiers of
belief” are often hardened and irreconcilable – at our
partners’ as well as in Germany – among Christians
as well as among Muslims in Africa, Hindus in India
or Atheists in Russia. Jürgen Klein who has been appointed
by our Ethiopian partner church to work for
the improvement of the relations between Christians
and Muslims has made similar experiences as I made
in the Central African Republic.
Time and again we experience a dangerous form of
denial on principle of other faiths – in the theological
training as well as in the congregations. Even if we
explain the history of Islam, compare the teachings
of the Koran and the Bible, even if we labour hard by
inviting people to respect people of different faith:
time and again we are confronted afterwards with the
attitude that the other faith is evil and opposed to god
and is simply to be eradicated from the face of the
earth. But seeing that communal violence is on the
rise and people of different faiths or different origin
are slashing at each other it is an absolute requirement
to understand each other’s way of thinking in
order to come to talking terms. For you can only talk
