46 TradiTion & innovaTion karneval dreigestirn DAS TRIFOLIUM ÜBERNIMMT DAS ZEPTER the trifolium takes the reins oBWoHL ES in vielen deutschen Städten Fasching oder Karneval gibt, gibt es in Köln so einige Besonderheiten. Even though carnival is celebrated in many German cities, Cologne prides itself of certain particularities. One of such particularities is that the city mutates into something of a monarchy during the ‘hot phase’ of carnival, with the city’s heads at the town hall having their powers symbolically removed. The ‘triumvirate’ officially takes over: In early January, the Lord Mayor hands the sceptre to the so-called Trifolium. The master over a carnival-infested Cologne from now on is “His Madesty” Prince Carnival. The key to the city is safeguarded with immediate effect by “His Heartiness” the Peasant and “Her Loveliness” the Virgin. Traditionally, the Trifolium is reserved to men exclusively, and even with the progress of emancipation and a female quota, nothing has changed about that to-date. Still, facial hair is strictly prohibited for the Virgin. All three positions are highly coveted and greatly respected, and the Trifolium tends to be manned (pun intended) by representatives from one and the same carnival association. However, it is a rather demanding venture, financially as well as in terms of time: the position of Prince registers at a starting price of Euro 50,000, which covers expenses for regalia, medals and sweets cast to the revellers during the carnival procession. And even continuing with one’s regular employment can be written off because of the up to 400 attendances per season to be made at carnival meetings, charities and other official events. Since the end of the 19th century, a custom has been cultivated during which the carnivalesque triumvirate is proclaimed. As a tourist, be sure not to make the mistake of mocking the splendid costumes of the Prince, the Peasant and the Virgin, as they are something of an official attire. The three roles originally embody the city’s unity and integrity, as well as loyalty and honesty. Cologne is very serious about its carnival, and to this very day, its temporary regents lend a sophisticated and official tone to the jecken Zick, or wacky season. ✴✴✴✴✴
