Wo kommen Sie ursprünglich her und wie sind Sie zur Hotellerie gekommen? Ursprünglich komme ich aus Ägypten. nachdem ich mein BWL-Studium in Kairo beendet hatte, arbeitete ich im Sheraton Hotel als „Passport clerk“. es faszinierte mich, all die wichtigen Staatsmänner während einer tagung dort persönlich zu erleben. So zog es mich in die Hotelbranche – und damit auch 1986 in das excelsior Hotel ernst in Köln. Und es hört nie auf, spannend zu sein! Was begeistert beziehungsweise fasziniert Sie an Grandhotels? Grandhotels, wie das excelsior Hotel ernst, haben für mich eine ganz besondere Ausstrahlung. es ist vielleicht das Alter und der damit verbundene charme der „Grande Dame“, was einem jeden tag ein besonderes Gefühl vermittelt. Das Glück, tagtäglich in einer solch „geschichtsträchtigen“ Hotellobby arbeiten zu dürfen, ist unbeschreiblich; und das merkt jeder Gast, der das excelsior Hotel ernst betritt. Ihr Geheimtipp zu deutschen Hotels? Ich persönlich bevorzuge die klassischen Grandhotels. Wenn ich nicht im excelsior arbeiten würde, wäre ich hier Stammgast – sagte er mit einem breiten Lächeln im Gesicht –, aber auch das Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten in Hamburg oder der nassauer Hof in Wiesbaden zählen zu meinen Lieblingen. Was macht für Sie den Unterschied zwischen dem Excelsior Hotel Ernst und anderen Hotels aus? Wir! Das Personal an der Rezeption, der Service und die Mitarbeiter, die man als Gast auf den ersten Blick wahrnimmt. Ich habe viele Hotels gesehen und kann Ihnen versichern, dass man sehr selten ein Hotel mit so gut geschulten und herzlichen Mitarbeitern findet. Hier ist man nicht nur eine Zimmernummer, sondern ein Gast! Sehen Sie Veränderungen positiv oder sehnen Sie sich nach den „alten Zeiten“? Ich sehe Veränderungen positiv, es gibt viele neue nationalitäten, die nun bei uns ein- und ausgehen. Ich freue mich natürlich jedes Mal, wenn Ägypter einchecken. „Aus Veränderungen das Beste machen“ – dieses Motto wird mir immer erhalten bleiben! excelsior hoTel ernsT conciergerie 57 Where are you originally from and what made you join the hotel industry? I am originally from Egypt. After completing my business studies in Cairo I worked at the Sheraton Hotel as their ‘Passport Clerk’. I was fascinated about all those important statesmen, to see them in person while they attended a local conference. So that attracted me to the hotel industry – and thus, in 1986 to the Excelsior Hotel Ernst here in Cologne. And it never ceases to be exciting! What is so fascinating about Grand Hotels for you? Grand Hotels like the Excelsior Hotel Ernst are extremely charismatic. Maybe it’s the age and the Grande Dame charm associated with it that creates this very special feeling every single day. To be so fortunate as to be able to work at a hotel lobby that can look back at such a historic past, is indescribable; and every guest joining us here at the Excelsior Hotel Ernst feels this. Your insider tip for German hotels? Personally, I prefer classic Grand Hotels. If I did not work at the Excelsior I would be a regular here – he says, flashing a huge smile – but the Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten in Hamburg or Nassauer Hof in Wiesbaden are amongst my favourites. To your mind, what distinguishes the Excelsior Hotel Ernst from other hotels? We do! The staff at the reception, the service and the personnel which any guest will immediately take note of. I have seen many hotels and I can assure you that hotels operating with such excellently trained and warm-hearted personnel as ours, are hard to find. You are not simply a room number here, but genuinely, our guest! Are changes positive for you, or do you sometimes yearn for the ‘old days’? Changes are something positive for me; we record many new nationalities and naturally, I am pleased every time someone from Egypt checks in. “Making the most of change!” – this will always be my motto!
