It is only logical to place Handel and his teacher Friedrich Wilhelm Zachow at<br />
the centre of a Handel Festival concert. And if that concert also takes place <strong>in</strong> an<br />
authentic venue – <strong>in</strong> the Marktkirche, also known as the Church of our Lady – it<br />
can really be considered to be a very fortunate concourse of circumstances.<br />
Zachow, who was appo<strong>in</strong>ted organist of the Marienkirche (Church of St Mary) <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>Halle</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1684, worked <strong>in</strong> Handel’s home town of <strong>Halle</strong> for 28 years up to his<br />
death exactly 300 years ago. With his Rhe<strong>in</strong>ische Kantorei and Das Kle<strong>in</strong>e<br />
Konzert, Hermann Max has written the history of <strong>in</strong>terpretation, pr<strong>in</strong>cipally of<br />
the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. At the same time, besides the great<br />
classics, the conductor has rema<strong>in</strong>ed as keen as ever on unearth<strong>in</strong>g obscurer<br />
works and mak<strong>in</strong>g new discoveries. The result is a concert of rarely performed<br />
works by Zachow and well-known compositions by Handel.<br />
