Since winning the Midem Baroque Award 2008 and the Classic FM Gramophone
Award 2007 for the best album of vocal Baroque music with their recording
of Handel’s Messiah, the Dunedin Consort & Players have been making
appearances not only in Scotland but all over Europe. In Halle, we will
have the chance to hear these excellent musicians, led by their artistic director
John Butt, for the first time. In his oratorio, the Messiah, Handel interwove the
austerity of Central German polyphony and all the finesse of Italian opera to
magnificent effect, thanks to his compositional skills and the incorporation of
successful existing duets and arias from his oeuvre. It was first performed on
April 13, 1742, in Dublin. In Germany, this version is now to be heard for the
first time in the church where Handel was baptised, performed by The Dunedin
Consort and Players.

Erst acht Tage vor der Uraufführung vollendete Händel 1735 die Partitur zur
Oper „Alcina“, die trotz des Erfolges fast zwei Jahrhunderte lang in Vergessenheit
geriet. Sie ist nach „Ariodante“ die zweite Ballettoper, die für das Covent
Garden Theatre geschrieben wurde und zusammen mit der von John Rich verpflichteten
französischen Tanzgruppe unter der Leitung der Primaballerina und
Choreografin Marie Sallé entstand. Für die Inszenierung der Neuproduktion in
Halle zeichnet der in Polen geborene Maler und Regisseur Andrej Woron verantwortlich,
der für seine explosive und fantastische Theaterbildersprache bekannt
ist.
Just one week before its premiere in 1735, Handel completed the score of the
opera Alcina which, despite its success, fell into oblivion for nearly two centuries.
After Ariodante, it is the second ballet opera which was written for the
Covent Garden Theatre, and was produced in collaboration with the French
