˝Salve Regina˝ is the Marian antiphony which is sung as part of the Catholic
canonical hours either after vespers or compline, depending on the Church season.
Martin Luther rejected any musical setting of this text for the services at the
castle church of Wittenberg. Today, we will be hearing a number of different
settings of the Salve Regina, including the one by George Frideric Handel, in the
church of St. Andreas where the reformer held his four final sermons and lay in
state before his body was transferred to Wittenberg via Halle. Antonio Florio
founded the multi award-winning ensemble I Turchini, which has established a
reputation as one of Italy’s leading ancient music orchestras, in 1987. The charismatic
singer Roberta Invernizzi has been delighting audiences all over Europe
for many years, the last time at the Handel Festival being in 2011 in a concert
with Café Zimmermann. Besides winning the Midem Classical Award in 2007,
the same year she also won the Stanley Prize for the best Handel recording of
the year with her release of the Handel cantatas.
