Yet by 1850, the labour activisthad emerged as a male figure. This course will chart the transition from community pressurepolitics to labour activism, analyzing the developments that underlay this masculinization ofthe British labour movement. The course will also take in the activities of working-classwomen, who were pushed to the margins of, if not officially excluded from, the predominantlyto exclusively male labour organizations, until they regained visibility through membership ofthe Women’s Co-operative Guild or the suffrage movement.
