Wirtschaftsjournal: ThyssenKrupp System Engineer -
ing has long made a name for itself as specialist in
plant construction and as an important supplier for
the automotive industry. How does the company
support the industry in its endeavor to profit from
the growing green mobility market?
ThyssenKrupp System Engineering: The company is
already involved in the field of electric mobility. We are
currently planning and producing module and battery
assembly systems for automobile manufacturers in Germany
and France.
WJ: ThyssenKrupp has set a goal to see the development
and production of lithium-ion batteries
through to maturity. What kind of progress has the
company made?
TKSE: The Battery Plant Technologies Division at
ThyssenKrupp System Engineering GmbH's Hohenstein-
Ernstthal subsidiary now has a technical center for lithiumion
energy storage devices in the Pleißa industrial park. This
is where we develop our systems, from the manufacture of
individual cells to the assembly of modules and entire
batteries. In doing so, we strive to take a leading role in the
industrial implementation of these systems technologies.
The technical center will be equipped with the most modern
development and testing equipment, including a drying
room, coating plant, and laser center. Anything that is ne -
cessary to the automatic production of cells and batteries
can be tested here.
WJ: Electrical energy storage devices are gaining
in importance not only in vehicle construction, but
also in other industrial applications and the pri vate
sector. What are the challenges facing the com pany
in this respect?
TKSE: We are also active in the development of batteries
for industries other than the automotive industry. The re -
quired number and diversity of electrical energy storage
devices present great challenges to our industrial production.
In addition to a favorable ratio of mass and power,
the main focus is on two additional requirements: quality
and cost.
WJ: One project outside of the automotive industry
is a collaboration with Bosch. What is the nature of
the partnership?
TKSE: The objective is to plan and construct a pilot manufacturing
plant for lithium cells in Eisenach. The purpose is
to research materials and production techniques for future
generations of lithium-ion cells that are used outside of
the automotive industry. We attach great importance to this
project, especially because few plant manufacturers in Europe
have the capacity to plan and develop such a plant. In
a time when renewable energies are gaining momentum
worldwide, lithium-ion batteries are a truly environment -
ally friendly alternative.
WJ: ThyssenKrupp System Engineering is an internationally
active subsidiary of ThyssenKrupp AG.
How is the Hohenstein-Ernstthal branch positioned?
TKSE: We are proud to have achieved our goals last fiscal
year. We have also set ambitious goals for the current fiscal
year. With our team of 260 employees, we are confident in
our ability to succeed.
