Zary ˙
Having already made a name for himself as a musician, the
24-year-old Telemann arrived in Sorau in Silesia, today’s Żary.
The art-loving Count Promnitz, one of August II’s courtiers,
had a very sumptuous residence here, emulating the »Sun
King« Louis XIV of France. The wonderful palace still remains,
a testament to this era.
Telemann did not refuse the Count’s offer to make him
conductor of the Sorau Court Orchestra. With this appointment,
a fruitful period began for him, for he was obliged not
only to conduct, but also to compose for the orchestra. Regular
guest appearances by Italian and French opera and ballet
companies, and not least the scores the Count acquired on a
grand tour of France, brought him into contact with modern
musical tendencies. During this time of his life, he also grew
acquainted with Polish and Moravian folklore, as he travelled
to Upper Silesia and Cracow; titles such as Alla polacca or
Polonaise reflect his broadening horizon.
