The banking metropolis on the River Main has more to offer
than Goethe and the Römer Building. It is the Telemann City
with the richest holdings of his manuscripts of sacred music.
For nine years he was the city’s music director and conductor
at the Church of the Discalced (Barefoot) Friars and at St. Katharinen,
but also the administrator of the »Most Noble Frauenstein
Society«. During his lifetime he left a plethora of compositions
to the city, which was a Free Imperial City at the time.
At the same time, Telemann, whose multiple talents are often
mentioned, also took up his work as a publisher in Frankfurt,
learning to engrave music for this purpose. He revived a local
Collegium musicum, giving the city a rich concert life – which
reverberates even during our own times.
