ifa-Galleries in Stuttgart and Berlin – Art is International
Text: Sarah Weckert
Galerie in Stuttgart initiiert. Als führende deutsche
Institution im internationalen Kunstaustausch
konzipieren und organisieren Kuratoren Ausstellungen
in Stuttgart, während seit 99 auch in
Berlin unter dem Gedanken „Kunst ist international“
ein unmittelbarer Dialog mit außereuropäischer
Kunst geführt wird. Aktuelle kreative Prozesse
gesellschaftspolitische Entwicklungen immer wieder
Every artist represents the country he comes from.
Is that wrong? True or false? Contemporary art is a
global phenomenon, and artists’ biographies are often
the curriculum vitae of cultural nomads. They
focus our attention upon the question of the conditions
required to provide opportunities for public
articulation. The ifa galleries are a platform where
people present contemporary art from beyond the
borders of European nations. Both galleries belong
to the Institute for Foreign Relations (ifa) in Stuttgart,
which was founded in 9 7. For almost 40 years
now the ifa Gallery in Stuttgart has been developing
a transcontinental cultural dialogue. As the leading
German institution in international art exchange, curators
plan and organize exhibitions here in Stuttgart;
and since 99 a direct dialogue with non-European
art is also being conducted in Berlin under the motto
“art is international”. Here, contemporary creative
processes and artworks as well as curatorial concepts
from Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe
are presented. The exhibitions are thus developed in
international cooperation, usually accompanied by a
programme of events that help to stimulate dialogue
between artists, curators and the public even after
the exhibition has closed. The support of contemporary
non-European art is targeted towards creating
ever new discussions of topical cultural and sociopolitical
developments. Worldwide projects connect
artists and audiences from diverse cultures with each
neu zur Diskussion zu stellen. Weltweite Projekte
bringen Künstler und Publikum unterschiedlicher
Kulturen miteinander in Kontakt und schaffen so
anhaltende Netzwerke. Regionale Schwerpunkte
other and thus create lasting networks. The current
regional focus lies in Asia as well as the Near and
Middle East. The ifa Galleries in Stuttgart and Berlin
plan and conduct four exhibitions per year that alternate
between locations. Many of the works at these
exhibitions are shown here for the first time in Germany,
and with this initiative the curators thus play a
leading role in the presentation of non-European art.
This progressive concept had already been developed
in 9 7, the year the ifa Gallery was founded, and
its goal was to overcome the borders between ethnographic
work and independent art, between the contemporary
world and its recent past, and to reflect
upon the manner in which it is portrayed. The events
organized around the exhibitions address the topics
of the globalization of the arts, of societies and of the
creative environment, and they offer a platform for
deeper discussions. The ifa Galleries in Stuttgart and
Berlin provide a home for lively creative exchanges,
encounters and debates. Considerable emphasis is
placed upon communicating art to others, particularly
children and youths. A coordinated programme
of projects, guided tours and workshops has been
designed to encourage them to relate to the art, design
and architecture of other cultures. This active involvement
in the materials exhibited helps to change
their perspectives and perceptions.
