Künstler mit Drucker, Gießer, Schreiner und Elektroniker,
verlieren afrikanische Künstler weitgehend
ihre Bindungen an eigene traditionelle Gewerke. Es
gibt keine Händlerstruktur mit Pigmenten, keine
Rahmenbauer, wenig Fotofachlabore – und wenn,
dann auf sehr niedrigem Standard. Verpackungs- und
Kunsttransportgewerbe würden für ganz Afrika keine
Seite in unserem Branchenbuch füllen.
Hinter diesen beliebig fortzusetzenden Mankos verbirgt
sich, leicht nachvollziehbar, eine mangelnde
Professionalität des Berufstands Künstler, über die
man sich hier schon fast sarkastisch lustig macht,
indem man die Begabung des Afrikaners im Allgemeinen
hervorhebt, er sei ein wahrer Meister der
Recyclingkunst. Entsprechend verkaufbar sind denn
auch diese Produkte. Meist von Blechmärkten afrikanischer
Hafenstädte.
Es gibt einige Institutionen in Deutschland, deren
Inhalte praktisch orientiert sind und Stipendiaten
beste Arbeitsmöglichkeiten bieten. DAAD in Berlin,
Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart oder ZKM
in Karlsruhe bieten auf dieser Ebene eine sinnvolle
Leistung.
Diese Angebote bieten jedoch keine Marktstimulanz.
Bis auf sehr wenige Ausnahmen von Künstlern, die
nach dem Stipendium im Deutschland verbleiben,
kehren die Künstler in ihr Heimatland zurück und
finden sich ohne Infrastruktur wieder oder versuchen,
in Ländern mit besserer Infrastruktur wie Frankreich,
England oder Italien unterzukommen, wo letztlich
das Einschreiben an Universitäten, Projektbeteiligungen,
Stipendien und Ausstellungsmöglichkeiten
– und damit Verdienstmöglichkeiten – besser gegeben
sind.
Wichtig sind daher Ausstellungen wie die Sonderausstellung
zeitgenössischer Kunst aus Südafrika auf
der kommenden art Karlsruhe im März, bei der die
Messeleitung, die Daimler Art Collection und das
Auswärtige Amt kooperieren, oder das Erscheinen
eines aufwendig vorbereiteten Bandes über Kunst aus
Afrika in deutschen Sammlungen im Sommer.
Afrikas Verlust seiner Vergangenheit durch den Übergang
von oraler Überlieferungstradition zu westlichuniversitärer
Ausbildung hat tragische Dimensionen.
In weiten Teilen Afrikas kann Geschichte fast nur
durch seine Kunst rekonstruiert werden. Daraus
leitet sich auch eine Verantwortung für uns Europäer
ab, die wir über Archive verfügen – die wir zugänglich
machen müssen.
Was wir durch eine Öffnung bekommen, ist eine
frische und äußerst lebendige Kunstszene, die in den
nächsten Jahren mit einigen Überraschungen aufwarten
wird.
cians, African artists have largely lost their ties to
their own traditional guilds. There are no commercial
structures for pigments, no frame makers, few photo
labs – and where these do exist, they are of a very
low standard. Art packaging and transport businesses
from all over Africa would scarcely fill one of our yellow
pages.
The list could go on indefinitely, and behind these deficiencies
lies a lack of professionalism amongst working
artists that is almost sarcastically made fun of here.
What talent these Africans generally have – truly the
masters of recycling art! And that’s just about how
easy it is to sell these products, often forged from the
scrap metal markets of African seaports.
There are some institutions in Germany whose programmes
are practically oriented, offering the best
working environment for the recipients of stipends.
The DAAD in Berlin, the Academy Schloss Solitude
in Stuttgart and the ZKM in Karlsruhe provide helpful
services on this level.
Such offers, however, provide no market stimulation.
With the exception of very few artists who remain
in Germany after their stipends have expired, artists
return to their countries of origin where no infrastructure
awaits them, or they attempt to relocate to
countries with a better infrastructure such as France,
England or Italy, where the opportunities to attend
a university, to participate in projects, to obtain a
stipend and to exhibit – and thus to find sources of
income – are more abundant.
Exhibitions such as the Special Exhibit of Contemporary
Art from South Africa at the “art Karlsruhe” in
March are thus important. Here the directors of the
art fair, the Daimler Art Collection and the German
Foreign Office are all cooperating. Equally important
is the publication of an elaborately edited volume on
art from Africa in German collections, which is due
to appear this summer.
What Africa has lost, historically, in the transition
from the oral mediation of cultural traditions to
Western academic education does indeed have tragic
proportions. In broad regions of Africa, art is almost
the only source available upon which history can be
reconstructed. This means that Europeans also have
a certain obligation: we have archives, and we have to
make sure they remain accessible.
What we, in turn, will receive from this accessibility
is a fresh and extremely lively art scene – one that
is sure to offer us a number of surprises in the years
to come.

Präsentation afrikanischer Inhalte arbeitet er mit
kunstgeschichtlichen Ansprüchen und ist weltweit

Peter Herrmann specialises in contemporary art, focusing
thematically on Africa and on authentic old
art from West and Central Africa. In his presentations
of African art and issues he applies the discipline of
art history, and he is one of very few gallerists worldwide
who have continuously dealt with Africa over
an extended period. Peter Herrmann is also an active
advisor in political and economic affairs as an expert
in African art and culture.
