Mit dem Postauto auf dem Weg über den Furkapass. By Post Bus on the road over the Furka Pass.
Unmistakeable – the familiar, three-note tune. After
all, the big yellow bus needs to make its presence known
to oncoming traffic as it wends its way through the
hairpin bends. The horn's main purpose is for safety on
the sometimes narrow roads of the pass. Yet those three
notes convey something more: memories of school trips
or holiday excursions along winding roads on the Post
Bus – pure nostalgia. The Post Bus's three-tone horn,
as it is officially known, has been in use since 1924. Yet
post horns were used even before that, in the days of
stagecoaches. The postilions used them to announce the
arrival and departure of the coaches. The modern automated
horn takes its tune from the overture to Gioachino
Rossini's opera "William Tell" and is therefore perfect for
the Uri alpine landscape.
Along narrow bends to the top of the pass
From mid-June to mid-October the three-tone horn
can be heard on the pass roads around Andermatt:
on the way over the king of passes, the Gotthard, over
into Upper Valais via the Furka Pass, on the roads of
the Grimsel Pass from Valais into the Bernese Oberland,
in the opposite direction when crossing the Nufenen
Pass from Goms into Ticino and between the Gadmer
Valley in the canton of Bern and the Meien Valley on the
Susten Pass road. As the Post Bus winds its way around
the narrow bend towards the top of the pass, travellers
are treated to spectacular views of flowering summer
meadows, clear mountain lakes, imposing mountain
backdrops and wide glaciers. The driver is left to focus
on the road, while the travellers can relax and fully enjoy
the fascinating panoramas.
Three Post Bus routes from Andermatt offer pass trips of
this kind: the Gotthard route, the Furka-Grimsel-Susten
route und die Gotthard-Nufenen-Furka route. The Post
Bus trips can be enjoyed as round trips, or combined
with bike or racing bike stages and hikes to suit personal
preferences and individual fitness.
