Lebensader und Teufelsberg, Dach Europas –<br />
der Gotthardpass ist viel mehr als bloss ein Übergang.<br />
<strong>2016</strong> steht das Bergmassiv zwischen Uri und<br />
Tessin wieder einmal ganz im Zeichen einer technischen<br />
Meisterleistung: Mit dem 57 Kilometer langen<br />
Gotthard-Basistunnel wurde Anfang Juni ein<br />
Weltrekord realisiert – der international längste<br />
Eisenbahntunnel, der fortan Erstfeld UR und Bodio<br />
TI verbindet, ging in Betrieb. Bei der feierlichen<br />
Eröffnung sind mehrere europäische Staatschefs,<br />
der Schweizer Gesamtbundesrat und über tausend<br />
weitere hohe Gäste dabei gewesen. Der Gotthard-<br />
Basistunnel ist das Herzstück der Neuen Eisenbahn-Alpentransversale<br />
(NEAT), die den Nord-Süd-<br />
Verkehr auf der Schiene neu beflügeln wird. Es ist<br />
das vorerst letzte Glied in einer langen Kette von<br />
Pionierleistungen zur Überwindung, Fahrbarmachung<br />
und Untertunnelung des Gotthardmassivs.<br />
Bis im Hochmittelalter war es weniger der Gotthard<br />
als vielmehr die Schöllenen (vgl. Seite 04), die als<br />
Schleuse für den Verkehr und politisch-gesellschaftliche<br />
Vorgänge wirkte. Für Andermatt und<br />
das Urserental, das damals zum Kloster Disentis<br />
gehörte, waren die Ost-West-Beziehungen massgebend.<br />
Nach Norden führten einzig gefährliche<br />
Bergwege. Das grösste Problem in der Schöllenen<br />
stellte der Chilchbergfelsen dar, der das Urserental<br />
nördlich abriegelte. Erst ein um 1200 konstruierter<br />
Holzsteg, die Twärrenbrücke, machte diesen Durchgang<br />
frei. Talwärts entstand bald eine weitere<br />
Holzbrücke, der «Stiebende Steg», wie die erste<br />
Teufelsbrücke auch genannt wurde. Damit begann<br />

A lifeline and the Devil's mountain, the rooftop<br />
of Europe – the Gotthard Pass is far more<br />
than just a crossing. In <strong>2016</strong>, the mountain range<br />
between Uri and Ticino is the setting for another<br />
technical feat. A new world record was set at<br />
the beginning of June with the opening of the<br />
57-kilometre Gotthard Base Tunnel – the longest<br />
railway tunnel in Europe, now linking Erstfeld in<br />
Uri and Bodio in Ticino. Several European Heads<br />
of State attended the opening ceremony, along<br />
with all the members of the Swiss Federal Council<br />
and more than a thousand other dignitaries.<br />
The Gotthard Base Tunnel is the centrepiece of<br />
the New Railway Link through the Alps (NRLA),<br />
aimed at boosting north-south rail communications.<br />
This is the latest link in a chain of pioneering<br />
achievements in conquering the Gotthard<br />
range, making it navigable and cutting tunnels<br />
through the mountains.<br />
Up to the Middle Ages, the Schöllenen Gorge<br />
(see page 04) was a much more common<br />
channel for traffic and socio-political activity.<br />
East-west relations were critical for Andermatt<br />
and the Urseren Valley, which belonged to the<br />
Disentis abbey at that time. Dangerous mountain<br />
pathways were the only way to reach the north.<br />
The greatest problem in Schöllenen was the<br />
Chilchberg rock, which sealed off the Urseren<br />
Valley to the north. A wooden footbridge, known<br />
as the Twärrenbrücke, was built around 1200,<br />
opening up this access. Another wooden bridge<br />
was soon built in the direction of the valley, the<br />
"spray bridge" as the first Devil's bridge was<br />
called. This signalled the start of 600 years of<br />
pack-horse crossings over the Gotthard. Cheese<br />
