AUTOPHAGY
Recycling for the body cells
ENGLISH
Autophagy, also called autophagocytosis, describes a process in cells with which they
break down and utilize their own components. This recycling process starts by itself
in humans, and particularly occurs if you do not add any food to the body for a certain
period of time. Autophagy is therefore also associated with so-called intermittent
fasting: abstinence from food for 14 hours or more starts the process and thus the
health-promoting recycling.
NOTHING IS LOST
In living beings, but also in the entire biosphere,
there are recycling processes in which a large
part of the starting materials is recovered.
In autophagy, this process also works like
a self-cleaning process of the cell:
defective or no longer required cell
components are broken down
and then recycled. So the body
will make new molecules
such as amino acids, fatty
acids or carbohydrates
available. A protein, for
example, is broken down
into its individual parts,
the amino acids, and
then used as a building
material for new proteins.
THE BODY RENEWS
AND CLEANSES ITSELF
The main trigger for autophagy
is stressful situations such as
food shortages and severe damage
to cells. Here it is primarily used to
provide the body with new nutrients available
from its own stock. At the same time, potentially
harmful cells can be destroyed, the body is
“purged” and gets rid of unnecessary cells.
If autophagy works properly, it provides protection
against diseases such as cancer, dementia,
heart disease, and bacterial infestation. This
is because deposits and malignant bacteria
do not accumulate in the first place, but are
broken down in the early stages.
HOW DO I PROMOTE CELL RECYCLING?
Sports: Both strength and endurance sports
promote autophagy. It is recommended not to
eat anything about two hours after exercising,
as this nutritional deficiency is again considered
to be a fasting period.
Intermittent fasting: The process starts from
around 14 to 17 hours. Regular fasting cures and
regular adherence to meal times are ideal.
Save calories: The process is also promoted by
a slight calorie deficit with a balanced diet.
Coffee: One study examined the effects of
coffee on mice. It was found that the popular
hot drink also stimulates autophagy.
Spermidine: Yes, actually. And that is not only
available fresh from the tap, but also as a dietary
supplement in the pharmacy. (ts,mb)
