casters have decided to smooth out film. To remove from film that
from which it lives, that which makes it what it is. When the latest
35mm cinema productions are broadcast on TV, there are no
problems. The grain issue can be disregarded here due to the size
of the individual frames. A system such as Relativity is applied to
35mm at the most when there are heavily underexposed or
pushed scenes. However there is also a second reason for “degraining”
16mm and Super 16: In the data compression required
to produce Blu-Rays, the film grain is a decisive factor which can
clearly reduce the limited bandwidth for the coding of the image
content.
At ARRI in Munich they are unhappy with the decision by the
broadcasters not to want to utilise Super 16 anymore. From a
short-term perspective, ARRI Relativity is profiting from this development.
But the permanent loss of this format is painful. Franz
Kraus, ARRI’s cEO, words it like this: “If things were actually replaced
for the right reasons, because one system is more superior
to another one, then we also have to accept that the death knell
has sounded for the format. But when I look at excellent Super
16 projects today which, as far as I’m concerned, have been processed
with ARRI Relativity, and I go to a test in a cinema and
the people in the beamer projection room are not able to tell if it’s
16 or 35, then you realise they’re using false arguments to phase
out a technology that has quite a lot of charm to it. 16mm is a
highly efficient, easily manageable format for a small team.”
On the other hand, with its digital Alexa, ARRI recently presented
a camera which will accelerate the demise of Super 16. With an exposure
latitude of roughly 13 f-stops and its large sensor, this piece
of equipment is able to produce electronic images which have a
similar character to those with traditional chemical film. The dis-
