Digital Options – Short Film in the Cinema
ihrer Multiplexe digital ausgestattet.
In Germany the digitisation of the cinemas is progressing. Several
large cinema chains have already pressed ahead and installed
digital equipment in their multiplex cinemas. However single
cinemas and smaller movie theatres, and especially arthouse and
local municipal cinemas, are still waiting until the details of the
state subsidies have been regulated here.
Digitisation already prevailed at a far earlier stage in the production
area than in the cinemas – above all in the production of
short films. If the equipping of the cinemas with digital facilities
occurs soon throughout Germany, that could prove to be enormously
helpful to the distribution of shorts. up to now most short
films only flickered across the silver screen when they could be
supplied in a 35mm film print. This hurdle will end as soon as the
cinemas are also able to project the formats in which short films
are made today. But as always, the devil is in the detail and different
new hurdles now have to be overcome on the route to the
cinemas.
The main issue is the cost of the digital projection. cinemas have
to make significant investments here, costs they will not be able
