Local companies work together to promote sustainability BY TV YOUNG tyyoungiaibizjournals com Two major companies created an Ari zona coalition promoting sustainable business practices last March and numer ous research reports show the organiza tion is right on target Intel Corp and Arizona Public Service Co officials spearheaded the formation of Arizona Businesses Advancing Sustain ability after determining the corporate climate was moving in a new direction The group since has increased its mem bership to 30 companies including Cox Communications Arizona The Dial Corp and Sundt Construction Inc The variety of industries represented shows the busi ness world s interest in im proving economic social and environmental prac tices said Ed Fox APS vice president and chief sustain ability officer The organiza tion is responding both to a renewedpublic thirstfor environmentally safe products and to an increased sense of corporate responsibility among the busi nesses involved he said At the first meeting we didn t really know what to expect But the energy and commitment from the people involved was very reassuring he said That level of energy has sustained itself over the year At their fourth meeting held in Decem ber members discussed ways to formalize the group s efforts while looking at new marketing concepts to explain its mission to others The group s first public effort came in November when it partnered with the Arizona Investment Council to host the Business and Climate Change Summit Since then multiple studies have fur ther detailed the definition of sustain Business Journal Phoenix Circulation: 15270 DMA: Phoenix, AZ ability a buzzword that has permeated the public and private communities Arizona State University s Morrison Institute for Public Policy and the Global Institute of Sustainability released Sus tainability for Arizona shortly after the summit exploring issues the business community has been concerned about for several years The study also detailed what Arizona businesses need to do to continue growth in this area Co author Nancy Welch of The Morrison Institute said defining the term sustainability was one of the study s larger hurdles It was something everybody was talk ing about but was really undefined she said We had a lot to learn when we start ed The size and prominence of certain companies leading the charge includ ing Wal Mart Stores Inc and Intel have been pushing sustainability practices into the mainstream But in the past few years small and midsize businesses have become more aware that they can earn money while taking on a larger role in environmental and community issues Welch said Beyond basic corporate initiatives com panies must plan further into the future to continue their progress she said Ac ceptance of new technology government support and education are at the heart of this she said I think the business community has been a very big catalyst in some ways and a follower in others Welch said I think we are seeing the start of the momentum toward a more connected community education environmental and business world Another recent study Leadership and the Corporate Sustainability Challenge by Atlanta based research organization Avastone Consulting showed U S enter © Copyright 12/14/2007 Business Journal Phoenix Cision USA, Inc.
