Title: Poly sci prof comments on Democratic race<br />

Nielsen NetRat<strong>in</strong>gs: 263382<br />

Favorability: Positive<br />

Full Text: Hillary Cl<strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong>n beat back a surg<strong>in</strong>g Barack Obama <strong>to</strong> easily w<strong>in</strong> <strong>Arizona</strong>’s Democratic<br />

presidential primary Tuesday, claim<strong>in</strong>g more than half <strong>the</strong> popular vote and a majority of <strong>the</strong> state’s<br />

56 delegates. Cl<strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong>n jumped <strong>to</strong> an early lead with mail-<strong>in</strong> ballots and never looked back, grabb<strong>in</strong>g<br />

more than 50 percent of <strong>the</strong> vote <strong>to</strong> Obama’s 40 percent with more than two-thirds of prec<strong>in</strong>cts<br />

report<strong>in</strong>g late Tuesday. Most of <strong>the</strong> rest went <strong>to</strong> John Edwards, who dropped out of <strong>the</strong> race last<br />

week. While polls showed Obama ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g on Cl<strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong>n <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al days and both sides predicted a long<br />

night, national TV networks were call<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Arizona</strong> primary by 9:30 p.m . It was a stunn<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>in</strong> for<br />

Cl<strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong>n, particularly given Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano’s enthusiastic back<strong>in</strong>g of Obama.<br />

"Everybody wants change," former state party chair Jim Pederson <strong>to</strong>ld Cl<strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong>n’s <strong>Arizona</strong> supporters<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>to</strong>ry celebration. "Who is <strong>the</strong> person <strong>to</strong> cause that change?" "Hillary!" <strong>the</strong> crowd shouted.<br />

"The Democrats <strong>in</strong> this state led a resound<strong>in</strong>g voice as <strong>to</strong> who should be our nom<strong>in</strong>ee <strong>to</strong> make that<br />

change," he said. The candidates treated <strong>Arizona</strong> like it mattered, heavily court<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> state’s 56<br />

delegates with public appearances, TV ads and direct mail. For pollsters, <strong>the</strong> excitement of Obama<br />

and <strong>the</strong> devotion <strong>to</strong> Cl<strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong>n made <strong>the</strong> race a mov<strong>in</strong>g target. Voters responded, with an estimated 50<br />

percent stream<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> polls <strong>in</strong> <strong>Arizona</strong> <strong>to</strong> cast 1 million ballots, nearly double a typical presidential<br />

primary election. Both campaigns set up <strong>Arizona</strong> headquarters, with offices and staff, and worked <strong>the</strong><br />

state’s urban areas hard for endorsements and voters. Cl<strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong>n held two rallies here <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> past few<br />

weeks, and her husband came <strong>in</strong> between. Obama drew 14,000 people <strong>to</strong> Veteran’s Memorial<br />

Coliseum last week, and his wife appeared Monday. On Tuesday even<strong>in</strong>g, both <strong>Arizona</strong> campaigns<br />

welcomed supporters at <strong>the</strong> same down<strong>to</strong>wn Phoenix hotel. Obama’s <strong>Arizona</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>gent started <strong>the</strong><br />

even<strong>in</strong>g with rock music and cocktails, but crowds started th<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g as <strong>the</strong> election results started<br />

roll<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>. Even so, he had a bigger, more raucous crowd than <strong>the</strong> tamer crew one floor below at <strong>the</strong><br />

Wyndham Down<strong>to</strong>wn Phoenix. Campaign staffers had expected <strong>the</strong> early returns of mostly mail-<strong>in</strong><br />

ballots <strong>to</strong> favor Cl<strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong>n. But as <strong>the</strong> night wore on, his supporters were brac<strong>in</strong>g for a loss. "Hey, at <strong>the</strong><br />

end of <strong>the</strong> day this is a race about delegates," said Rep. David Schapira, D-Tempe. "We’re just go<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>to</strong> have <strong>to</strong> keep on fight<strong>in</strong>g." Schapira and o<strong>the</strong>r Obama supporters po<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>to</strong> w<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r states<br />

and were hopeful he could split <strong>the</strong> <strong>Arizona</strong> delegates, even if he didn’t close <strong>the</strong> gap. The candidates<br />

generally appealed <strong>to</strong> two w<strong>in</strong>gs of <strong>the</strong> Democratic party, with Cl<strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong>n claim<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> traditional voter<br />

who values experience and Obama appeal<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> idealistic young and new voter. "There’s this k<strong>in</strong>d<br />

of tension, at least with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Democratic party, between what we want and hope for versus what we<br />

th<strong>in</strong>k we might need," said political strategist Bob Grossfeld. "It’s go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> be a choice between one’s<br />

head and one’s heart." The Democratic contest doles out its delegates proportionate <strong>to</strong> vot<strong>in</strong>g results<br />

both statewide and by congressional district, so nei<strong>the</strong>r Cl<strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong>n nor Obama would grab all of <strong>the</strong>m<br />

Tuesday. Nor will <strong>the</strong>ir w<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rest of <strong>the</strong> Super Tuesday states determ<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> Democratic<br />

nom<strong>in</strong>ee. But <strong>the</strong>y’ll be able <strong>to</strong> claim bragg<strong>in</strong>g rights <strong>to</strong> <strong>Arizona</strong>, which has emerged as a key sw<strong>in</strong>g<br />

state with a tre<strong>asu</strong>re trove of Hispanic, <strong>in</strong>dependent and women voters. Cl<strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong>n was expected <strong>to</strong> grab<br />

most of <strong>the</strong> Hispanic vote <strong>in</strong> <strong>Arizona</strong>. Dur<strong>in</strong>g Tuesday night’s Cl<strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong>n celebration, cheers of "Si se<br />

puede!" erupted each time her opponent appeared on <strong>the</strong> TV screen. And as prom<strong>in</strong>ent Democrats<br />

<strong>to</strong>ok <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> stage <strong>to</strong> lead <strong>the</strong> celebration, former state party chair Jim Pederson asked, "How do you<br />

say Madam President <strong>in</strong> Spanish?" "Senora Presidente!" <strong>the</strong> crowd roared back. Cl<strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong>n state direc<strong>to</strong>r<br />

Rick Ridder said <strong>the</strong> two-term New York sena<strong>to</strong>r spoke <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> concerns of <strong>Arizona</strong> voters, outl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

plans <strong>to</strong> freeze home foreclosures and <strong>in</strong>terest rates and create "green" jobs. "People <strong>in</strong> this state are<br />

hurt<strong>in</strong>g," Ridder said. "It just may be <strong>the</strong> economy, stupid." The pollsters and pundits have had trouble<br />

predict<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Democratic race all along thanks <strong>to</strong> two dynamic candidates with barn-s<strong>to</strong>rm<strong>in</strong>g<br />

campaigns and similar platforms. "People truly are mak<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>the</strong>ir m<strong>in</strong>d late," said Patrick Kenney,<br />

chair off <strong>Arizona</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s political science department. "They’re wait<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong>y’re wait<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
