On Monday (February 4, 7 pm EST) NASA’s Deep Space Network (DSN) <strong>to</strong>ward <strong>the</strong> North Star,<br />

Polaris. The transmission sent was <strong>the</strong> song ’Across <strong>the</strong> Universe’ by <strong>the</strong> Beatles <strong>in</strong>tended for any<br />

sufficiently advanced extra terrestrial life <strong>to</strong> listen <strong>to</strong>. Although this is a nice gesture and may nurture<br />

Beatles fans beyond our solar system, some scientists have expressed concerns for advertis<strong>in</strong>g our<br />

planet’s location <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> universe, just <strong>in</strong> case <strong>the</strong> aliens listen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> aren’t that friendly after all& The<br />

ma<strong>in</strong> argument aga<strong>in</strong>st try<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> communicate with o<strong>the</strong>r civilizations is <strong>the</strong> possibility that if <strong>the</strong>re are<br />

aliens out <strong>the</strong>re listen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong>n perhaps <strong>the</strong>y might not be friendly. By giv<strong>in</strong>g away our location,<br />

critical facts about our society, biology and <strong>in</strong>telligence, we have already given possible alien<br />

aggressors a strategic advantage. This threat is obviously very far-fetched, but send<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

about our current state of humanity will be <strong>in</strong>accurate when signals are received <strong>in</strong> hundreds,<br />

thousands or millions of year’s time, perhaps putt<strong>in</strong>g our future generations <strong>in</strong> a negative light. ’Before<br />

send<strong>in</strong>g out even symbolic messages, we need an open discussion about <strong>the</strong> potential risks [&] It’s<br />

very charitable <strong>to</strong> send out our encyclopedia, but that may short-change future generations.’ -<br />

Douglas Vakoch of <strong>the</strong> SETI Institute, Mounta<strong>in</strong> View, California.<br />

Vakoch is not concerned that we are risk<strong>in</strong>g an alien <strong>in</strong>vasion any time soon, but does highlight <strong>the</strong><br />

need <strong>to</strong> discuss <strong>the</strong> implications of attempted extra-terrestrial communication <strong>in</strong> an open scientific<br />

forum before act<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

If <strong>the</strong>re are any advanced alien be<strong>in</strong>gs out <strong>the</strong>re however, <strong>the</strong>y are keep<strong>in</strong>g very quiet. The purpose<br />

of <strong>the</strong> ’Sound of Silence’ meet<strong>in</strong>g is <strong>to</strong> discuss why <strong>the</strong> SETI project has, thus far, not found anyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

compell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> suggest <strong>the</strong>re are any life forms transmitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir presence <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> universe. ’Have we<br />

been look<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wrong place, at <strong>the</strong> wrong time, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wrong way?’ asks Prof Paul Davies of<br />

<strong>Arizona</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong>. ’The purpose of this meet<strong>in</strong>g is <strong>to</strong> bra<strong>in</strong>s<strong>to</strong>rm some radically new th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

on <strong>the</strong> subject.’ Source: Telegraph.co.uk Filed under: NASA, SETI<br />
