mentary School students<br />
Tuesday and Wednesday at<br />
<strong>the</strong> school s library He start<br />
ed by provid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m with <strong>the</strong><br />
essential first step <strong>in</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
book<br />
Th<strong>in</strong>k S<strong>to</strong>rad said <strong>to</strong> a<br />
group of preschoolers and<br />
third graders Wednesday<br />
afternoon You have <strong>to</strong> have<br />
some ideas That s how you<br />
start <strong>to</strong> write a book S<strong>to</strong>rad<br />
<strong>the</strong>n expla<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> role of edi<br />
<strong>to</strong>rs publishers and illustra<br />
<strong>to</strong>rs — people needed <strong>to</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> idea of a book a reality<br />
S<strong>to</strong>rad s educational back<br />
ground <strong>in</strong>cludes undergradu<br />
ate degrees <strong>in</strong> journalism and<br />
environmental science as well<br />
as a master s degree <strong>in</strong> sci<br />
ence journalism from <strong>Arizona</strong><br />

turnal creatures <strong>the</strong> pack<br />

Children s books are my<br />
fun job on <strong>the</strong> side said<br />
S<strong>to</strong>rad who has written over<br />
a dozen children s or young<br />
adult books He calls <strong>the</strong>m<br />
non fiction because <strong>the</strong>ir sub<br />
jects are based on real crea<br />
tures<br />
My <strong>in</strong>tent is <strong>to</strong> help chil<br />
dren learn that read<strong>in</strong>g is<br />
fun he said S<strong>to</strong>rad said<br />
sometimes children ask him<br />
why he does not write fiction<br />
but he f<strong>in</strong>ds his current genre<br />
<strong>to</strong>o much fun <strong>to</strong> let go<br />
I like <strong>to</strong> write about <strong>the</strong><br />
real world S<strong>to</strong>rad said The<br />
world around us is an <strong>in</strong>ter<br />
est<strong>in</strong>g place You just need<br />
<strong>to</strong> slow down and take a<br />
look<br />
S<strong>to</strong>rad said that as a visit<br />
<strong>in</strong>g author he has been <strong>to</strong><br />
eight states more than 700<br />
schools and estimates that <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> 10 years he s been travel<br />
<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> country with his work<br />
he has spoken <strong>to</strong> 700 000<br />
children This is his second<br />
visit <strong>to</strong> Dexter<br />

ually Students will provide<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir own illustrations and be<br />
edi<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>to</strong> each o<strong>the</strong>r s work<br />
Miles called S<strong>to</strong>rad s advice<br />
about book writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>valuable<br />
She said S<strong>to</strong>rad s visit as well<br />
as many o<strong>the</strong>r art music and<br />
drama programs at Dexter Ele<br />
mentary are made possible<br />
through fund<strong>in</strong>g received from<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>State</strong> F<strong>in</strong>e Arts dollars<br />
