ASU students drum up economic partnerships abroad

The Emerald Isle and the Grand Canyon
State may be diametrically different in
nearly every way but Arizona State Uni
versity students still are finding a major
resource in their Irish counterparts
A handful of ASU science and chemistry
students are yartnering with peers from
Ireland s three universities to advance
their research and find a market for their
products ASU President Michael Crow a
big supporter of making the school a scien
tific research powerhouse said Ireland is
an obvious entry point for global business
We are always lookingfor ways to enter
Arizona State University into new areas
in the global economy Crow said Ire
land is a great entry point because of its
dedication and support of research fund
ing and educational excellence
In Ireland much of the investment for
research into alternative energies bio
technology computer science and infor
mational sciences comes from the private
and public sectors With more than 5 bil
lion invested in science and technology
research since 2000 Intel Corp Hewlett
Packard Co and dozens of other large
companies have targeted Ireland for fu
ture research partnerships
These economic connections attracted
many ASU researchers and students But
ASU also caught the eye of some visitors
from Ireland including Sarah Ingle a pro
fessor of entrepreneurship at Dublin City
University
While spending some time in the Val
ley last year and meeting with leaders of
ASU s WP Carey School of Business she
became impressed by the entrepreneurial
spirit of the students Before returning
to Ireland she hatched a plan with Julia
Rosen ASU s assistant vice president of

Meanwhile ASU junior biochemistry
student William Hamilton is trying to cre
ate synthetic proteins to use in artificial
blood He developed his idea while serving
in the U S Army prior to starting at ASU
As he sifts through chemicals and peers
through microscopes to complete his re
search students at DCU are looking for
biotechnology companies to fund and
eventually buy his invention
A lot of students businesses are fairly
standard A lot of groups create restau
rants or online companies that provide
some sort of a service said Teegen
McGuire a senior DCU marketing stu
dent When we saw the different busi
ness ideas that were coming from ASU
we thought William s project sounded
really interesting
McGuire alongwithfourother students
already has courted Biopure Corp Hemo
sol BioPharma Inc and Northfield Lab
oratories to participate in the research
Each of those bioscience companies is in a
different stage of artificial blood produc
tion but all said they could benefit from
Hamilton s research McGuire said

The entire group studies at NUI alway
and hopes to follow the Irish tech transfer
process that could lead to business oppor
tunities While in Ireland they use the
university s facilities partner with other
researchers and work within the country s
research based economic infrastructure
They also hope this research exchange
will lead to further partnerships between
the two universities
We re really interested in learning
from the Irish model and developing long
termpartnerships between NUI and ASU

Ph D student handling much of Joshi s
research in Ireland
NUI Galway President Iognaid Muir
cheartaigh said he s happy to see students
from ASU using the resources of his school
A strong proponent of global connection in
research he said international partnerships
are the future of innovation
It makes me feel good to see this hap
pening he said Our futures are depen
dent on what takes place today and what
these students are doing at both schools
will be very important in the future
