<strong>ASU</strong> students drum up economic partnerships abroad<br />

<strong>State</strong> may be diametrically different <strong>in</strong><br />

nearly every way but <strong>Arizona</strong> <strong>State</strong> Uni<br />

versity students still are f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g a major<br />

resource <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir Irish counterparts<br />

A handful of <strong>ASU</strong> science and chemistry<br />

students are yartner<strong>in</strong>g with peers from<br />

Ireland s three universities <strong>to</strong> advance<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir research and f<strong>in</strong>d a market for <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

products <strong>ASU</strong> President Michael Crow a<br />

big supporter of mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> school a scien<br />

tific research powerhouse said Ireland is<br />

an obvious entry po<strong>in</strong>t for global bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

We are always look<strong>in</strong>gfor ways <strong>to</strong> enter<br />

<strong>Arizona</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> new areas<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> global economy Crow said Ire<br />

land is a great entry po<strong>in</strong>t because of its<br />

dedication and support of research fund<br />

<strong>in</strong>g and educational excellence<br />

In Ireland much of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestment for<br />

research <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> alternative energies bio<br />

technology computer science and <strong>in</strong>for<br />

mational sciences comes from <strong>the</strong> private<br />

and public sec<strong>to</strong>rs With more than 5 bil<br />

lion <strong>in</strong>vested <strong>in</strong> science and technology<br />

research s<strong>in</strong>ce 2000 Intel Corp Hewlett<br />

Packard Co and dozens of o<strong>the</strong>r large<br />

companies have targeted Ireland for fu<br />

ture research partnerships<br />

These economic connections attracted<br />

many <strong>ASU</strong> researchers and students But<br />

<strong>ASU</strong> also caught <strong>the</strong> eye of some visi<strong>to</strong>rs<br />

from Ireland <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Sarah Ingle a pro<br />

fessor of entrepreneurship at Dubl<strong>in</strong> City<br />

<strong>University</strong><br />

While spend<strong>in</strong>g some time <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Val<br />

ley last year and meet<strong>in</strong>g with leaders of<br />

<strong>ASU</strong> s WP Carey School of Bus<strong>in</strong>ess she<br />

became impressed by <strong>the</strong> entrepreneurial<br />

spirit of <strong>the</strong> students Before return<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>to</strong> Ireland she hatched a plan with Julia<br />

Meanwhile <strong>ASU</strong> junior biochemistry<br />

student William Hamil<strong>to</strong>n is try<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> cre<br />

ate syn<strong>the</strong>tic prote<strong>in</strong>s <strong>to</strong> use <strong>in</strong> artificial<br />

blood He developed his idea while serv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> U S Army prior <strong>to</strong> start<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>ASU</strong><br />

As he sifts through chemicals and peers<br />

through microscopes <strong>to</strong> complete his re<br />

search students at DCU are look<strong>in</strong>g for<br />

biotechnology companies <strong>to</strong> fund and<br />

eventually buy his <strong>in</strong>vention<br />

A lot of students bus<strong>in</strong>esses are fairly<br />

standard A lot of groups create restau<br />

rants or onl<strong>in</strong>e companies that provide<br />

some sort of a service said Teegen<br />

different stage of artificial blood produc<br />

tion but all said <strong>the</strong>y could benefit from<br />

A Ful<strong>to</strong>n School of Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

The entire group studies at NUI alway<br />

and hopes <strong>to</strong> follow <strong>the</strong> Irish tech transfer<br />

process that could lead <strong>to</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess oppor<br />

tunities While <strong>in</strong> Ireland <strong>the</strong>y use <strong>the</strong><br />

university s facilities partner with o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

researchers and work with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> country s<br />

research based economic <strong>in</strong>frastructure<br />

They also hope this research exchange<br />

will lead <strong>to</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r partnerships between<br />

<strong>the</strong> two universities<br />

We re really <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Irish model and develop<strong>in</strong>g long<br />

termpartnerships between NUI and <strong>ASU</strong><br />

It makes me feel good <strong>to</strong> see this hap<br />

pen<strong>in</strong>g he said Our futures are depen<br />

dent on what takes place <strong>to</strong>day and what<br />

<strong>the</strong>se students are do<strong>in</strong>g at both schools<br />
