<strong>Research</strong> Support<br />

Department of <strong>Research</strong> <strong>Management</strong><br />

The Department of <strong>Research</strong> <strong>Management</strong> (RM) focuses mainly on<br />

the needs of established researchers. It manages:<br />

• All NRF grants, excluding Thuthuka and student bursaries.<br />

• The Technology and Human Resources for Industry Programme<br />

(THRIP).<br />

• The development of an in-house research information system,<br />

RIMS, and the roll out of the national DST/NRF supported InfoEd<br />

RIMS.<br />

• The submission of applications for NRF rating.<br />

• The registration and activity reporting of research institutes,<br />

centres and units.<br />

• The submission of publication research output subsidy claims to<br />

the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).<br />

• The development and implementation of various categories of<br />

research incentives.<br />

• Applications for research leave and research sabbaticals via the<br />

<strong>NMMU</strong> <strong>Research</strong> Committee, which is chaired by the Director of<br />

RM.<br />

• All external research grants aimed at established researchers.<br />

• Internal support such as the Transformation and Equity <strong>Research</strong><br />

Grants (TERG) and the <strong>Research</strong> Theme Grants (RTG).<br />

• The Unit for Statistical Consultation (USC), which renders a free<br />

statistical consultation service to staff, as well as postgraduate<br />

students.<br />

• The identification and nomination of staff for external research<br />

awards.<br />

• The DST/NRF <strong>Research</strong> Chairs.<br />

• The <strong>Research</strong>er of the Year Awards.<br />

• Internal and external research surveys.<br />

• <strong>Research</strong> partnerships.<br />

• Monitoring various research activities on behalf of the Deputy<br />

Vice-Chancellor: <strong>Research</strong> and Engagement and the <strong>NMMU</strong><br />

<strong>Research</strong>, Technology and Innovation (RTI) Committee.<br />

• Advises the Capital Resource Allocation Committee (CRAC) on<br />

the allocation of research equipment, and<br />

• Individual research accounts in close cooperation with <strong>NMMU</strong>’s<br />

Finance Department.<br />

Department of <strong>Research</strong> Capacity Development<br />

The Department of <strong>Research</strong> Capacity Development (RCD) focuses<br />

mainly on the needs of emerging researchers and postgraduate<br />

students. Its core functions are:<br />

• Managing institutional and external funding support for<br />

postgraduate students.<br />

• Facilitating initiatives to expand the levels of accredited research<br />

outputs by emerging researchers.<br />

• Improving the academic staff qualification profile.<br />

• Assuming responsibility for institutional research capacity<br />

development programmes/interventions.<br />

• Providing mentorship to developing research staff and postgraduate<br />

students.<br />

• Harnessing the research contribution of research associates, and<br />

• Managing the <strong>NMMU</strong> <strong>Research</strong> Ethics Committees (Animal and<br />

Human).<br />

Department of Innovation Support and Technology<br />

Transfer<br />

The Department of Innovation Support and Technology Transfer<br />

(IS&TT) undertakes the following activities:<br />

• Technology transfer activities, which encompass the protection,<br />

management and commercialisation of <strong>NMMU</strong>’s Intellectual<br />

Property (IP) such as:<br />

- Development of patenting/protection strategy.<br />

- Development of commercialisation strategy.<br />

- New company creation and protection of <strong>NMMU</strong>’s interests.<br />

- License agreements.<br />

• Innovation Support for external research-related activities such<br />

as facilitating collaborations and contracts, proposal writing,<br />

access to funding, including:<br />

- Presence on Advisory Boards of research entities with commercial<br />

activities.<br />

- Contract development and negotiation.<br />

- <strong>Management</strong> of Innovation Award scheme.<br />

- Implementation of Technology Transfer and Proposal Tracking<br />

modules in InfoEd.<br />

• Other innovation activities at local, provincial and national level<br />

such as:<br />

- Running the National Innovation Competition at <strong>NMMU</strong>.<br />

- Guiding the Regional Technology Transfer Office anchored<br />

at <strong>NMMU</strong>.<br />

- Driving the creation of a regional innovation forum.<br />

- Development of the business case for the creation of a<br />

<strong>Research</strong> Park at <strong>NMMU</strong>.<br />

Finance Department<br />

The Department of Finance has created a section (comprising three<br />

staff members) whose primary function it is to focus on researchrelated<br />

financial matters.<br />

The Unit for Statistical Consultation<br />

The Unit for Statistical Consultation (USC) renders a free statistical<br />

consultation service to staff as well as Masters and Doctoral<br />

students engaged in academic research. In <strong>2011</strong>, a total of 122<br />

students and staff members made use of this service.
