CANRAD celebrated a second year of functioning on 23 March<br />

2012. Tremendous progress has already been made in terms of<br />

lodgement within the University and the <strong>Nelson</strong> Mandela Bay<br />

Metro. Their outputs in terms of SAPSE publications as well as<br />

engagement activities belie the small staff complement (four fulltime).<br />

The successfully piloted The Herald/<strong>NMMU</strong> Community Dialogues<br />

continued into 2012. Their "Scholarship of Engagement" approach<br />

with regards to socially engaged research has ensured deepening<br />

contact with at least three faculties.<br />

CANRAD continues to build strong networks and partnerships locally,<br />

nationally and internationally to give effect to an important <strong>NMMU</strong><br />

and national mandate in South Africa today.<br />

Centre for High Resolution Transmission<br />

Electron Microscopy<br />

Leader: Prof J Neethling<br />

The Centre for HRTEM was officially opened on 11 October <strong>2011</strong> by<br />

the Higher Education and Training Minister, Blade Nzimande. All the<br />

electron microscopes and related instruments with a total value of<br />

R96 million have been successfully installed and commissioned in the<br />

new CHRTEM. The Master Funding Agreement between the NRF and<br />

<strong>NMMU</strong> was signed on 27 March 2012 and the process of advertising<br />

for Centre staff will start as soon as the Conditions of Grant document<br />

for the annual operating expenses of the CHRTEM is signed. This<br />

document has been finalised by the NRF on 23 April 2012.<br />

The outputs (publications and students supported) of the Centre<br />

on 31 March 2012 were nine journal articles (all ISI and IBSS), 10<br />

conferences (three international, of which two were published;<br />

seven national attended), one Masters degree (by research), and<br />

three Doctoral degrees.<br />

Built Environment <strong>Research</strong> Centre<br />

Leader: Prof W Shakantu<br />

The purpose of the Built Environment <strong>Research</strong> Centre (BERC) is to<br />

conduct built environment industry originated research, facilitate<br />

the learning of industry sponsored MSc and PhD candidates, and<br />

engage in extensive collaboration with other research institutes<br />

regionally, nationally and internationally.<br />

The <strong>NMMU</strong> Built Environment <strong>Research</strong> Centre (BERC) was officially<br />

recognised by a Senate Resolution in March <strong>2011</strong>. The Centre’s<br />

first task was to source external funding. This was achieved via<br />

R1 million per annum for three years funding from the Construction<br />

Industry Development Board. The Centre hosts three PhD students,<br />

two Masters, a postdoctoral fellow and a research associate.
