44 NMMU Research and Innovation Report 2011 - Research Entities Research Entities Research entities are intended to position NMMU at the forefront of national and international research in relation to the institutional research themes. Research entities contribute towards the establishment of a vibrant research and innovation culture by creating a research environment that fosters and enhances multi-/ inter-/cross-/transdisciplinary research. During 2011, there was a period of consolidation of research entities resulting in 26 registered research entities. At the highest level were institutes (three), followed by centres (nine) and units (fifteen).
