26 Tybee Breeze A New Way to Look at You Tybee Island YMCA and Recreation Department Has something for everyone! What better way to start off the summer than with a great workout at the Tybee Island YMCA? We have day passes, 45 day, and three month seasonal memberships for those of you just visiting for the summer. Come try out an aerobics class or get a great workout in our fitness center. On vacation and need a break from the kids for a day? Drop them off at summer camp. Sign up for a full week or just drop in for a special half-week rate for ages 5-16. We also have Mother’s Morning Out Programs for preschoolers ages 3-4. This half day camp is held twice a week at the YMCA. It’s not too late to sign up for any of our summer camp programs for youth including surf and kayak camp, day camp, aquatic nature camp, and junior lifeguard camps. We have some great field trips planned this month. Join us at camp for a trip to Summer Waves on Jekyll Island the week of June 11 th . We are also headed to the Riverbanks Zoo to explore the animal kingdom in Columbia, South Carolina the week of June 25 th . Children must be enrolled in the summer camp that week to attend. The fifth season of swim team practice begins this month at River’s End Campground Pool. New and old participants are welcome. Join the fun as youth ages 6-18 compete in swim meets against other YMCAs in Savannah. Not ready for swim team just yet? We have swim lessons at the Beachside Colony Pool in June and July for ages 3-8. Shag dance lessons continue all summer long in the cafeteria on Thursdays from 7:30- 8:30pm. Bring the whole family for a night of true east coast dancing. Instructor Pat Folds is a former national shag dance competitor and brings a wealth of experience to the class. All ages and abilities welcome. By Hillary Brodofsky Executive Director Summer Aerobics classes are flexible and fun. Tai Chi classes have expanded to Wednesday and Friday mornings at 9:30am in the old school. Spin classes are going strong on Thursday mornings at 7am. Water aerobics are Monday/Wednesday/Friday at 9:00am and Tuesday/Thursday at 6:00pm at the River’s End Campground. Check out Senior Chair Aerobics Monday-Saturday at 11am in the old school. Tone and Burn will give your strength training workout a jump start on Monday/Wednesday/Friday at 8:00am in the Teen Center. For a gentler workout, try low impact cardio on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:00pm in the old school. Finally, try our popular yoga classes on Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday at 9:30am and Tuesday/Thursday at 6:00pm all held in the old school classroom. Don’t forget about our financial assistance program. At the Tybee Island YMCA we strive to make programs affordable and safe for all participants regardless of income level. Our YMCA board of directors is working tirelessly to fundraise over $24,000 in 2007 that goes directly towards scholarships for families and youth to enjoy our YMCA memberships and programs. No child or family is ever turned away from the YMCA due to an inability to pay. If you would like to make a contribution to this cause or you or someone you know has a financial burden, please refer them to the YMCA to ensure a great summer.
Tybee Island YMCA Camp Schedule June 4th-June 8th: Mission Impossible Week Campers will enjoy completing a different mission each day as groups compete against each other to complete the most missions the fastest. June 11th-June 15th: Splish Splash Week Campers will enjoy water activities each day. If you choose to go, we will be taking a field trip to Summer Waves this week. June 18th-June 22nd: Y World of Sports Week Campers will go to Daffin Park this week to face-off against the other YMCAs. Which camp will win? Campers will also learn about a different sport each day. June 25th-June 29th: Safari Week Campers will go on an African adventure this week by learning something new about their culture each day. We will also be taking an optional field trip to the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, South Carolina. July 2nd-July 6th (no camp on July 4th!): Holiday Week Campers will celebrate a different holiday each day with themed activities. July 9th-July 13th: Hollywood Week This week campers will compete in a lip sync contest as well as a Mr. and Mrs. Ugly pageant (campers will dress their counselors to participate in this pageant!). July 16th-July 20th: Under the Sea Week Campers will participate in more water games and have a second opportunity to go to Summer Waves. July 23rd-July 27th: Ooey Gooey Week Prepare to get messy! This week will include a wacky science day when campers will make slimy substances. Bring a change of clothes on Friday for our chocolate pudding slide! July 30th-Aug. 3rd: Superhero Week Campers will get to dress as their favorite super heroes in our super hero parade. Campers will also meet local heroes and transform their counselors into unique superheroes in our supercounselor pageant. Aug. 6th-Aug. 10th: Back to the Future Week Campers will travel back into pre-historic times through the year 3000 in this week of time travel. Aug. 13th-Aug. 17th: Space Invaders Week Campers will battle in Battle of the Planets. We will also be going on an optional field trip to the Jacksonville Science Museum to see a planetarium show. Aug. 20th-Aug. 24th: Medieval Times Week Campers will enjoy the Southside YMCA Renaissance Fair at the end of the week.
