What’s In a
Name?
By Judy O’Neill
Recently, I was standing in the front yard having a
serious Tybee-type discussion with Kathamy and
the O. Jays, friends of mine who were biking by on
a quest for some Tybee Adventure. Tybee
Adventures for locals more than likely consist of
eating, drinking, visiting, beaching or biking, or a
combination of as many of those as we’re up to at
that particular time.
The conversation turned to food and where they
were going to eat. For such a small island, Tybee
has some really good food offerings. I love the new
Marlin Monroe’s, although half the time, I call it
Marilyn Monroe’s. I like the new Norased Grill. On
a visit there, I learned that Norased is the chef’s
name. I enjoy and appreciate all our long-time
eating establishments and subscribe to the theory
that the best thing to make for dinner is
reservations. But, we were joking and talking
about names for possible new places.
For instance, I think
we should have a
burger place called
“Bummer Burger.” It
could be run by all
of us old Beach
Bums as part-time
summer jobs or
maybe even, for Bummettes never change.
the really old Bums, full time jobs so they’ll have
something to do in retirement. The rest of us could
work in shifts so that we could still go to our real
jobs (if we have them) and not be over stressed
or, especially, over worked. Since that would be
against Bum Philosophy.
If you travel around a bit and get off the island once
in a while, you’ll see some places with interesting
names. Nearby Bluffton and Hardeeville have the
famous Squat and Gobble. Downtown Savannah
