30 By Saturday Martini The first annual pirate convention was held in New Orleans and several members of Tybee Fest were off to check it out and learn how to make our pirate festival here on Tybee better. Check Out photos on page 50. “We drove our Chevy to the levy, but the levy was gone!“ Alright, everyone was checked into the hotel and we were on Bourbon Street by noon. I know that I said that you can not drink vodka all day, but after 5 days on Bourbon Street – I now know that you can! Ok, since I had been to New Orleans before I briefed the group on the scams: these people have been working the streets since they were two; there is no way you will beat them. A very popular scam that can be used on anything, shoes, watch, etc., is that, they bet you money that they can tell you exactly where you got your shoes, what city and state, and for extra $$, narrow it down to what street! Ummm, on your feet in New Orleans, Louisiana on Bourbon Street (as they walk away with your cash)! No sooner had this story left my lips… Geno was falling for that EXACT same scam! Ok, after I rescued him and turned around, every one else in the group had hats in their hands?? What did I tell you? This guy has a “security” hat on and is well into his speal by the time I get over to Mr. Breeze, and I told him to go ahead and ask the guy to cut to the chase and tell you how much?? After they heard… they all gave the hats back! Now repeat after me, “dude you already got me” and keep moving. There were Tybee Breeze many pirate parties, meetings, a pirate parade and a pirate ball. All the ladies were dressed in pirate garb, while the guys represented and wore their Tybee Island Pirate Fest Shirts. Rob had his hair braided with beads in it and a bandana on (like he always does), but still, he looks like a pirate right? As we all went into the bar where the ball was, I noticed that Rob was still outside with the bouncers? I went out thinking that he had left his pass behind, but they were not going to let him in… because he had a bandana on!! I said, “Seriously?” and they said, “yeah, no colors!” Well you all know “Gangsta’ Rob” in his pink bandana will mess you up!! So, we proceeded to go to the bar across the street, where we discovered it is a small world after all. The bartender saw the Tybee t-shirts and asked if we might know her cousins (she said, “I know you probably won’t and everyone always says do you know so-in-so from so-in-so and you never do”). We said, “What are their names?” and she said, “Cam and Kelle”, and we looked at each other and said, “Actually… we do!” We snapped a photo, she wrote a note to the cousins on bar stationary and we delivered it back to Tybee! The bars on Tybee need to check out how New Orleans does Happy Hour!
After a worked filled weekend (Yeah Rriiggghhht!!), we headed back to our own party town. I forgot that I was given an Anheuser beer can with water in it, they were made to give out as part of the relief effort from hurricane Katrina, and they would absolutely not let me through security with the water, so I made them check my can – amazingly I got it back unscathed! But how did I manage to make it through with liquid purell hand sanitizer, a mini key chain flask that Deb bought me as a souveniour from New Orleans, and 40 pins that were stuck in 20 new Voo Doo dolls – go figure? I thought we would be home earlier and Erika called me and asked “where are you?” I sighed and said; “home” and she said surprisingly, “you’re at the Quarter?” “Why yes I am!” Anyway, all turned out well and thanks to a Voo Doo High Priestess - I love instant Karma! To err is human, to forgive - highly unlikely. Bonnie had a surprise birthday party at the NBG with many friends in attendance. The party continued onto the Quarter with Amber, Janet, Laura and Delaine. Bonnie’s friend Whitey came into town and I think Catfish is in love again! The American Legion held their annual Derby Hat Party and many ladies showed up. Wanda was looking lovely and Linda was there with her mom Lin. Lisa came in first, Marlene (who really had a bee in her bonnet) came in second and Rose third.
