32 The SCAD Sandcastle Contest was great with a lot of creative builds; my favorite was the Hungry-Hungry Hippos! I think it took FU all day to build that big one. The Friends of the Tybee Theater held a wine and cheese reception at the American Legion to celebrate the new roof, and The Tybee Trolley shuttled folks over to the theater to get an up-close look. President Susie Morris said, “That everyone did a fabulous job.” Congratulations to all the Friends of the Tybee Theater. The Third Annual Turtle Trot took place on a beautiful day with the police (smile John, smile Sarge) there just to make sure that those crazy turtle people did not get out of control. Mayor Buelterman started the race, and you may say that it was once again eventful! As I waited for “Turtle” Rob to get there… late of course, I took my pictures of the runners and the volunteers that made it all happen, thanks to Todd, Mike, Tammy, Lara, Sarah, Kristin, Anna, and Heather. Eric was running this year while pushing little Ava Grace. The timer got to almost 7 minutes when Rob and Angela decided to show up, and so now we can Tybee Breeze take off (ok – walk off), no big deal, we are only 7 minutes behind. We were told to turnaround at the “turtle,” we’ll, I never saw a turtle, and at about the time that I got tired, I started realizing that I did not think we walked this far last year. Rob got someone from the Marine Science Center on the phone and they said the turn-around was at the Desoto? We were at the North Beach Jetties!! How did that happen? We were only 7 minutes behind? Can you believe within that time that they had already packed up the turn-around point and headed back? Yes, now I am smacking Rob in the back of the head all the way to Marlin Monroe’s, where I decide to rest and have a cocktail to help me press on and make it all the way back to the pier. At the time we ordered our Bloody Marys, I realized that since I was walking I did not have any money, so “Rob, give me some money,” “I don’t have any money!” No one has money?? Great!! Brad – ley – please?... I will be back! Ut Oh, Rob’s phone rings, and we are told that Todd and Jason are looking for us… YES! We have been rescued (well it felt like a desert island that day and much further to the pier than a mile)!! But as we were walking out of Marlin’s, they drove right by and did not see us, so yes, more smacking Rob in the back of the head! Finally, as we were approaching the finish line we noticed the beach was now packed, the timer was gone, and where are our flip flops? Still we took the obligatory photo of “The Breeze” finishing dead last, where we thought the finish line would have been. After stumbling off the beach Todd informed us that we finished in 1 hour and 40 minutes, the worst time thus far (so much for beating my 50 minute time last year, so more smacking Rob in the back of the head). We still got our photos taken in the turtles and Rob got his face painted by Sarah. It is safe to say that the Turtle Trot, surprisingly, has not
yet had one dull moment! I look at it as we went that “extra” 2 miles that day for the turtles, and Rob was proving that turtles are “really” slow, and yes, I did go back and pay Bradley. So after the turtle trot I went to Spanky’s to collect my things and have some lunch, where I ran into Tara and baby Carson, and David was kind (or cranky) enough to tell us to “move that baby stroller off Hwy. 80!” Terry was showing us her boo boo at Tybee Time, and doesn’t it seem that every time you go into the Wind Rose t h a t Rob is in that same position? All smiles! At the Brass Anchor, Fro was getting a Tat from Dan. Road trip! Billy Currington came into town and a group of us girls went to see him: Laura, Jamie, Amanda, Cindy, Terry, Rene, Kelle, and her mom. He was great and while we were there we ran into Steve & Bethany, Paul & Terry Jackson, Stacye & Lonny, Rob and his parents, Mac & Margie, and Bubba & Bonnie Hiers. Pam Cirelli-Johnson from the Tybee Island Lighthouse was there as well. The shuttle bus took us back to Tybee Time where Steve was working and Howard wanted some love (someone has a birthday coming up)! Beach Bum is always a good time, especially in a drought! As the floats lined up, Glenn & Nalene got married on their float in the North Beach parking lot. This was the first Beach Bum wedding ever. Mayor Buelterman did the honors, and when it was over the bridal party soaked them with water guns, and of course they got annihilated on the parade route! My favorite was the tanning salon that was an entry into the parade – you know it’s a bad day when you get out of the nice Hummer and pee on your feet and do not realize everyone is watching – I’ll make you famous! The Tybee Trolley did an awesome job shuttling people around the island that evening (even Ms. Sylvia took advantage and made it to Doc’s dry) no driving, no parking and no worries!
