Diane Gray and Skip Sasser tied the knot on May 19th. The horns blew and the sirens blared as the new Mr. and Mrs. Fire Chief emerged from Trinity Chapel. The unique lighthouse wedding cake was a definite focal point at the reception held at the MRS Shack. CONGRATULATIONS SKIP AND DIANE! Prior to the recent family crisis, I finally had the opportunity to visit Dee and Christina up in Cornelia. Actually it was a working trip, helping them find their new home to buy. Dee is all settled in his new office, and yes all of his DAWG stuff is there! (Which sits well….with the Mayor who is a die hard Ga. Tech fan). We attended the city’s Apple Festival and it was sort of strange to see mountain and country artwork instead of beaches, lighthouses, etc. Candace, as you can imagine, already knows just about EVERYONE, as does Jacob! Candace most of all misses her friendly Tybee Librarians and attending council meetings! 40 Tybee Breeze Time really goes by fast and it is hard to believe that our little Ruby will be 1 year old this month! (Grandma’s babies are growing up too fast!). HAPPY BIRTHDAY RUBY! The God Abouts Senior Adult Ministry’s June event will be of patriotic theme, “God Bless America.” The date is June 19th at 12:00 noon, it will be covered dish …bring your favorite salad. The Sojourners will entertain with patriotic music. The ministry is sponsored by Chapel by the Sea Baptist Church and is open to everyone. Call Betty or Jurell Davis @ 897-2364. Jules Cantin has been a little under the weather but is feeling much better. KEEP ON GETTING BETTER JULES! My Mom, Corinne Owen continues to improve and will hopefully be back on her feet soon!! New African American Bookstore Held Grand Opening on May 19th SENSATIONAL MINDS, Savannah’s new exclusive African American Bookstore, held its grand opening on Saturday May 19 th . Events included a book signing by Savannah’s own Julia Phillips, author of “When Jesus Speaks, I Write.” There was a remote radio broadcast provided by Magic 103.9 and a community health screening. Sensational Minds offers books in 22 different categories including Fiction, Self-Help, History & Politics, Social Science/Ethnic Studies, Medical, Health & Fitness, Art, Poetry, Religion, Christian Reading, Music, Children’s books and much more. Sensational Minds is located at 129 E. Montgomery Crossroads (in the Oakhurst Shopping Plaza). Business Hours are 10am – 6pm. Monday through Saturday. The owners, Don and Genitha Singleton would like to thank the community for participating in this event filled day; celebrating the array of literature by African American authors. Don and Genitha will continue to reach out and offer their services to the residents of the Savannah area & the Low Country community.
This spring, the Friends of the Tybee Theater reached a milestone in our quest to raise the curtain on the Old Post Theater. We completed Phase One of our restoration project, and hosted a Wine & Cheese Reception at the American Legion on April 29th to celebrate. An excited group of theater supporters, several dignitaries including Connie Gomes from Representative Jack Kingston's office, and two members of the Tybee City Council watched as Mayor Jason Buelterman presented our President, Susie Morris with an official framed copy of the City of Tybee's "Proclamation of Support." A special word of thanks goes out to all of you who joined us, and to all of the volunteers who made the event possible. While our guests enjoyed hors d'oeuvres and sipped wine, they learned about upcoming plans to continue the theater's transformation. Then, they boarded the shuttle, courtesy of the new Tybee Trolley Service, to ride to and from the theater site where Tybee Island Historical Society Director, Cullen Chambers was on hand to answer questions. For those who don't know, Fort Screven's Post Theater was one of the first in the State of Georgia to show movies with "sound." Throughout the 1930's and early 40's, soldiers were treated to many hours of entertainment there. At the end of World War II, the theater was de-commissioned along with other fort buildings. Most island residents alive today, who remember seeing films, meeting friends and courting spouses in the old movie house, remember it after it became the "Beach Theater." By 2001, the building had long been abandoned - it would have gone the way of the wrecking ball had not the Tybee Island Historical Society stepped in to purchase it. Shortly thereafter, the Friends of the Tybee Theater was formed, whose mission it is to fund the total restoration. After the "Friends" became a separate 501c-3 nonprofit, they purchased the building from the Tybee Island Historical Society, and in September 2006, began work on the exterior. Phase One - the stabilization of the building and installation of its new roof - is now complete. The steel beams that brace the new roof are the originals, installed in 1930 - eighty percent of the wood is also original. Phase Two will give Tybee's "abandoned lady" the total makeover she truly deserves. We plan to bring the interior back to life by following the original blueprints as closely as possible. But once fully operational, the theater will not only be functional, it will be a state-of-the-art performance venue - totally equipped to play a prominent role in Tybee's future. During the second half of 2007, the Friends of the Tybee Theater will undertake a "Capital Fundraising Campaign," and events are being scheduled for the upcoming months. If you've ever longed for a first class venue on this side of the Lazaretto, now's the time to step forward. Some individuals have already done so. On May 20th, Bonnie Gaster hosted a "Barbecue and Marshgrass Music" Pig Roast at Eagles Nest Drive. Supporters enjoyed an evening of great music and great food - all for the benefit of the theater. Incidentally, the summer movie series in Memorial Park is back. This season, we're cosponsoring movies with the City of Tybee, Tybee YMCA, and Tybee Arts Association. Starting at "dark-thirty" Tybee Time (8PM), movies will be shown on the gymnasium wall, and if it rains, inside the gym. Suggested donations are $5.00, children under 3, free! (Sorry, no pets, please!) But while you’re sitting there in your lawn chair with those mosquitoes buzzing and biting, take heart... by 2009, hopefully, we'll have an air conditioned, indoor venue - right here on Tybee Island!
