[Declaration of Herman Remschart and Albert Cornelissen respecting certain words which<br />

passed between Jacob Bouwensen and Johannes Winckelman]<br />

[13a] [Before me], Cornelis van [Tienhoven], appointed secretary in New Netherland [for] the<br />

Chartered West India Company, [appeared Herman Remsch]art, aged 49 years, and Albert<br />

Cornelissen, aged 26 years, who at the request of Jacob Bouwensen jointly testify, attest and<br />

declare, in place and with promise of a solemn oath if necessary, that it is true that at the house of<br />

said Remshart some words passed between said Jacob Bouwensen and Johannes Winckelman,<br />

among others these: Said Winckelman said to Jacob Bouwensen, “I give you the sack; you do<br />

not suit me,” whereupon Jacob answered, “I give you the sack also.” All of which the deponents<br />

offer if necessary and required to confirm on oath, as every one is bound to testify to the truth,<br />

especially when requested so to do, the deponents declaring that they have done this to no one’s<br />

benefit or injury, without fear or favor, or personal hatred of anyone. Done this 8th of March<br />

anno 1642, in Fort Amsterdam in New Netherland. 24<br />

[13b] In the [name of God, Amen]. On the fifteenth day of March [in the year after the birth] of<br />

His only [begotten Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus] Christ, sixteen [hundred and forty-two],<br />

before [me, Cornelis van Tienhoven], appointed secretary [in] New Netherland for [the General]<br />

Chartered West India [Company, residing] in Fort Amsterdam, [personally] appeared Barent<br />

Dircksen from Norden 25 [and Lysbet] Dirckx, his lawful wife, residing [here] on the island of<br />

Manhatans in New Nether[land], both in bodily health, able to go about and in full possession<br />

and exercise of their faculties, understanding and memory as seemed evident to us, who declared<br />

that they, the testators, considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the hour thereof,<br />
