[Power of attorney from Lucas Gerritsen to Nicolaes van Lit|<br />

to receive moneys from the WIC]<br />

[160a] Before me, Cornelis van Tienhoven, secretary of New Netherland, appeared Luyckas<br />

Gerritsz from Amsterdam, who sailed as a mariner in the year 1646 on the ship De Princes,<br />

Captain Jelmer Tomasz, [master], for the account of the chamber of Amsterdam, and who<br />

appoints and empowers, as he does hereby, Mr. Nicolaes van Lit, at Amsterdam, to ask and<br />

receive in the principal’s name from the honorable directors of the Chartered West India<br />

Company, chamber at Amsterdam, the sum of fifty-seven guilders, two stivers, earned by him, the<br />

principal, on the ship De Princes, as appears by the annexed account. On payment of the aforesaid<br />

sum by the said honorable directors to the attorney, he or his substitute is empowered to grant a<br />

receipt therefor in due form, which shall avail their honors as good payment. He, the principal,<br />

promises to hold and to cause to be held valid all that his aforesaid attorney or his substitute shall<br />

do and perform in the matter, they to do therein as he, were he present, could or might do. Thus<br />

done and signed by the principal in the presence of the subscribing witnesses. Done the 22nd of June<br />

anno 1647, in Fort Amsterdam in New Netherland.<br />

disbursed by Cornelis van Tienhoven<br />

[160b] I, the undersigned, Frederick Lubberssen, inhabitant of the island of Manhatans, hereby<br />

acknowledge for myself, my heirs and successors that I am well and truly indebted to Cornelis van<br />

Tienhoven, at present secretary in New Netherland, in the sum of nine hundred Carolus guilders for<br />

disbursed and advanced moneys received by me to my content and satisfaction before the execution<br />

hereof. I therefore promise to tender and pay the aforesaid sum to the above mentioned Tienhoven<br />

or his order, free of costs and charges, in three installments, to wit: anno 1648, on the 22nd of July,<br />

three hundred guilders; anno 1649, on the 22nd of July, three hundred guilders; and anno 1650, on<br />

New Netherland Research Center New Netherland Institute
