could be seen at both ends. On the lead was marked in figures, not stamped but scratched, that the<br />

aforesaid piece of duffel was thirty-nine and one-quarter ells long, but in the presence of the<br />

deponents and of, me, the secretary, it was found to be long thirty-six ells and five-eights of an ell,<br />

so that it was found to be two ells and five-eights short. This the deponents offer to confirm by oath<br />

if necessary and this is done by them in order to bear witness to the truth, which every one is bound<br />

to do when required. In token of the truth this is signed by the deponents, the 14th of December<br />

anno 1646, in New Amsterdam in New Netherland.<br />

[154f] This day, date underwritten, before me, Cornelis van Tienhoven, secretary of New<br />

Netherland, appeared Mr. Augustyn Heerman, who binds himself as surety and principal for Mr.<br />

Adriaen van der Donck in the sum of sixty guilders, which are allowed the aforesaid van der<br />

Donck by agreement between [him and] Philip Jansen Ringo on account of Antony Crol, being a<br />

certain balance due on two masts, on condition that if it can hereafter be proved that the above<br />

mentioned Antony Crol paid the said van [der] Donck for the two masts, then the surety above<br />

mentioned hereby promises to tender and pay to the aforesaid Philip Jansen the aforesaid sixty<br />

guilders, free of costs and charges. In witness whereof this is signed by Mr. Augustyn Herman as<br />

surety in the presence of the undersigned witnesses, the 14th of December 1646, in New<br />

Amsterdam.<br />
