Mecklenburg County Park & Recreation Nature McDowell Nature Center 15222 York Road • Charlotte • 704-588-5224 • Open Mon-Sat, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Sun 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm The McDowell Nature Center serves as the gateway to the 1,107-acre McDowell Nature Preserve and is the source for educational programs and information on the preserve’s natural communities, flora, and fauna. The Nature Center is recognized as a WNCW Oasis and accepts the Oasis member discount card for gift shop purchases. Mecklenburg County Park & Recreation McDowell Nature Center Outdoor Recreation Wilderness First Responder - Landmark Learning/Wilderness Medicine Institute of NOLS Nationally recognized program that trains participants to respond to emergencies in remote settings. The 80-hour curriculum includes standards for urban and extended care situations. Special topics include but are not limited to: wound management and infection, realigning fractures and dislocations, improvised splinting techniques, patient monitoring and long term management problems, up-to-date information on all environmental emergencies, plus advice on drug therapies. Emphasis is placed on prevention and decision-making, not the memorization of lists. This course is designed specifically to provide you with the tools to make critical medical and evacuation decisions in remote locations. Half of your time will be spent completing practical skills, case studies and scenarios designed to challenge your decision making abilities. Adult CPR is included in this course. Then cap it off with an overnight campout where we will sing songs, roast s’mores, and take a “Nature at Night” Hayride before sleeping in a private tent with your family. Gear and meals are provided, and include lunch on Thursday and Friday, dinner on Friday night, and breakfast on Saturday morning. Additional family members are welcome to join us for the Friday evening campfire cookout and hayride without camping out for a small additional fee. Registration required.
