Kayak and Camping on<br />

Mountain Island Lake<br />

Pack an overnight bag and join us for kayaking<br />

and camping on Mountain Island Lake! We<br />

will be enjoying an afternoon kayaking tour of<br />

the lake that will depart from Latta Plantation<br />

Nature Preserve and end at a camp that will be<br />

set up for you by our staff. We will enjoy dinner<br />

while watching the sunset from a secluded cove,<br />

a campfire, and an optional night paddle. In the<br />

morning we will wake up to breakfast prepared<br />

by our staff and enjoy a morning paddle back to<br />

Latta Plantation Nature Preserve. Be prepared<br />

for semi-primitive camping and please pack<br />

weather appropriate clothing. Camping and<br />

paddling gear will be provided as well as dinner<br />

BSA: Wilderness Survival<br />

Upon completion of this course, all registered<br />

Boy Scouts will earn the Wilderness Survival<br />

Merit Badge. Scouts will have instructional and<br />

practical sessions during the day then complete<br />

their requirements by sleeping overnight in<br />

a shelter that they have constructed out of<br />

natural materials. Please bring clothing and rain<br />

gear that will be safe and appropriate for an<br />

overnight stay in your shelter without the use of<br />

a sleeping bag. Lunch, dinner and breakfast will<br />

be provided. This will take place at Rural Hill<br />

near Latta Plantation Nature Preserve. All day<br />

Saturday, ends at noon Sunday. Max 12 students.<br />

Please bring a water bottle, snacks, and a bed<br />

sheet that can get dirty. Note any food allergies.<br />

Teen Backpack Trip<br />

<strong>Get</strong> out of town during spring break and visit<br />

the beautiful Cumberland Island National<br />

Seashore in Georgia. We will travel by van to<br />

St. Mary’s, Georgia where we will catch a ferry<br />

ride over to this historic island. Once on the<br />

island, we will hike to several campsites while<br />

exploring the historical sites, forests, and beaches<br />

that the island has to offer. Be prepared for<br />

primitive camping and backpacking during<br />

this trip. Meals will be provided during the<br />

camping portions. Bring money for food stops<br />

to and from Cumberland Island. Basic camping<br />

and backpacking gear will be provided and a<br />

packing list will be explained upon registration.<br />

A pre-trip meeting is required and will be<br />

scheduled approximately 2 weeks before the trip.<br />

Wilderness First Aid<br />

We are proud to announce that we will be<br />

offering Wilderness First Aid certification<br />

through partnership with Landmark Learning<br />

and the Wilderness Medicine Institute of NOLS.<br />

Upon successful completion of this training, each<br />

participant will receive their certification in<br />

Wilderness First Aid. There will be an optional<br />

CPR class Friday night and the First Aid class<br />

will take place Saturday and Sunday. This is a<br />

hands-on intensive training perfect for outdoor<br />

professionals and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Join<br />

us for a fun and practical training that just might<br />

save your life! Max 30 students. Students should<br />

bring a bag lunch, writing utensils, and paper.<br />

Students should be prepared with weather<br />

appropriate clothing. Hours are subject to class<br />

needs and certification is dependent on the<br />

wanting to practice their skills with ACA certified<br />

instructors. We will cover topics including: boat<br />

types, entering/exiting the boat, paddle strokes,<br />

rescues, and safety equipment. Please bring a<br />

lunch, change of clothes (one set will get wet!),<br />

and shoes that can get wet. All kayaking<br />

equipment will be provided. This class will be<br />

held at Latta Plantation Nature Preserve.<br />

including Buster Boyd Bridge which connects<br />

North Carolina to South Carolina. Maximum 8<br />
