of years (e.g., Berger et al., 1992). As discussed<br />

above, uncerta<strong>in</strong>ties <strong>in</strong> estim<strong>at</strong>ion of <strong>at</strong>mospheric<br />

CO 2 concentr<strong>at</strong>ion, ocean he<strong>at</strong> transport,<br />

<strong>and</strong> perhaps o<strong>the</strong>r factors <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> time of <strong>the</strong> kAp<br />

københAvn Form<strong>at</strong>ion are sufficiently large to<br />

preclude strong conclusions about <strong>the</strong> causes of<br />

<strong>the</strong> unusual warmth.<br />

Potentially correl<strong>at</strong>ive records of warm <strong>in</strong>terglacial<br />

conditions are found <strong>in</strong> deposits on<br />

coastal pla<strong>in</strong>s along <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>and</strong> western<br />

shores of AlASkA. <strong>High</strong> sea levels dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>terglaci<strong>at</strong>ions repe<strong>at</strong>edly flooded <strong>the</strong> ber<strong>in</strong>G<br />

StrAit, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y rapidly modified <strong>the</strong> configur<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

of <strong>the</strong> coastl<strong>in</strong>es, altered regional cont<strong>in</strong>entality<br />

(isol<strong>at</strong>ion from <strong>the</strong> moder<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>fluence<br />

of <strong>the</strong> sea), <strong>and</strong> re<strong>in</strong>vigor<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> exchange of<br />

w<strong>at</strong>er masses between <strong>the</strong> North Pacific, <strong>Arctic</strong>,<br />

<strong>and</strong> north AtlAntic oceAnS. S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> first submergence<br />

of <strong>the</strong> ber<strong>in</strong>G StrAit about 5.5–5 Ma<br />

(Mar<strong>in</strong>covich <strong>and</strong> Gladenkov, 2001), this<br />

mar<strong>in</strong>e g<strong>at</strong>eway has allowed rel<strong>at</strong>ively warm<br />

<strong>High</strong> sea levels dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>terglaci<strong>at</strong>ions<br />

repe<strong>at</strong>edly flooded<br />

<strong>the</strong> Ber<strong>in</strong>g Strait, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>y rapidly modified<br />

<strong>the</strong> configur<strong>at</strong>ion of<br />

<strong>the</strong> coastl<strong>in</strong>es.<br />
