TYPE 2 VEGETABLES<br />
Vegetables are <strong>food</strong>s derived from many different k<strong>in</strong>ds of plants mostly annual and usually cultivated,<br />
commonly known by custom and tradition as “vegetables”:<br />
In several countries, some of these commodities grown on large areas are dist<strong>in</strong>guished as “field crops” or<br />
arable crops e.g. sugar beet. For the sake of convenience <strong>in</strong> this guide such crops are classified under Type<br />
2 Vegetables.<br />
Exposure to <strong>pesticides</strong> is dependent on the particular part of the plant used for <strong>food</strong> and the grow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
practices.<br />
Vegetables may be consumed <strong>in</strong> whole or <strong>in</strong> part and <strong>in</strong> the form of fresh, dried or processed <strong>food</strong>s.<br />
Bulb vegetables<br />

Bulb vegetables are pungent highly flavoured <strong>food</strong>s derived from fleshy scale bulbs (<strong>in</strong> some commodities<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g stem and leaves), of the genus Allium of the lily family (Liliaceae). Bulb fennel is <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> this<br />
group; the bulb-like growth of this commodity gives rise to similar <strong>residues</strong>.<br />
The subterranean parts of the bulbs and shoots are protected from direct exposure to <strong>pesticides</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
grow<strong>in</strong>g season.<br />
The entire bulb may e consumed after removal of the parchment-like sk<strong>in</strong>. The leaves and stems of some<br />
species or cultivars may also be consumed.<br />
Portion of the commodity to which the MRL applies (and which is analysed): Bulb/dry onions and garlic:<br />
Whole commodity after removal of roots and adher<strong>in</strong>g soil and whatever parchment sk<strong>in</strong> is easily<br />
detached.<br />
Leeks and spr<strong>in</strong>g onions: Whole vegetable after removal of roots and adher<strong>in</strong>g soil.<br />
