approved course (two weeks minimum), six months full time (or equivalent)<br />
supervised training in a recognised hospital with a consultant hyperbaric physician,<br />
and possession of a Diploma in Diving and <strong>Hyperbaric</strong> Medicine administered by<br />
SPUMS or equivalent;<br />
• hyperbaric physician – a physician with training and experience in hyperbaric<br />
medicine who is able to prescribe HBOT and is medically accountable for the safety<br />
of patients and staff. Minimum requirements are less than those for a consultant<br />
hyperbaric physician and include full registration as a medical practitioner by the<br />
appropriate Medical Registration Board and successful completion of an introductory<br />
course in hyperbaric medicine;<br />
• hyperbaric attendant – a person who has successfully completed a course to a level at<br />
or exceeding hyperbaric attendant qualifications as provided by the <strong>Hyperbaric</strong><br />
Nurses Courses in Australia. An “inside” attendant should be medically fit to enter<br />
the chamber with a skill set reflective of the needs of the patients undergoing<br />
treatment. The “outside” attendant need not be medically fit to enter the chamber<br />
unless emergency protocols require such entry.<br />
• chamber operators – monoplace operators and hyperbaric technical officers are<br />
personnel who have completed training courses, the minimum standards of which<br />
are suggested in HOTFIG.<br />
