A sensitivity analysis that examined results based on study design (ie., two studies 47,49<br />

using a randomised controlled approach), HBOT protocols used (ie., three studies 46-48<br />

using the two-phase protocols), and recent publication (ie., three studies 47,48,50 published<br />

after 1995) provided evidence of the robustness of the results (Figure 5), although studies<br />

with stronger study designs were more likely to report results that were further from<br />

Risk of minor amputation<br />

The review defined minor amputation as amputation of the toe or forefoot and was<br />

limited to those performed below the ankle joint. Only three studies reported these<br />

outcomes, representing the experience of 155 subjects. 48-50 Excluding the study by<br />

Zamboni et al, 50 which reported no minor amputations, all other studies reported<br />

increases in the risk of minor amputations following HBOT compared to comparison<br />

therapies, although none reached commonly accepted levels of statistical significance.<br />

The pooled estimate of the odds of minor amputations is 1.76 (95% CI = 0.68, 4.59; p =<br />

0.245). Subjects exposed to HBO were about 75 percent more likely to undergo minor<br />

amputations compared to those receiving comparison therapies (Figure 6).<br />
