Limits of the review of safety and effectiveness<br />
Validity refers to the approximate truth from which inferences and conclusions can be<br />
drawn. The two types of validity measures that are most relevant to HBOT are internal<br />
and external validity. Internal validity assumes that the results of a study are attributable<br />
to the intervention and not to other alternative explanations. External validity refers to<br />
the generalisability of the results with respect to patients outside the study population. A<br />
review of the literature on HBOT identified a wide range of methodological problems. In<br />
this review, approximately 50% of the studies adopted quasi-experimental or nonrandomised<br />
designs as part of their methodology. This is problematic when trying to<br />
reach credible conclusions regarding the effectiveness of HBOT for specific indications.<br />
Internal validity<br />
Of the studies evaluating HBOT a number of threats to internal validity were identified.<br />
History<br />
This threat applies when an observed effect might be due to an external event occurring<br />
