GHILLEAN T. PRANCE
Ghillean T. Prance was born in Suffolk, England. He was educated at Malvern
College in Worcestershire and holds a B.A., M.A., and D.Phil. from Oxford
University.
From 1963 to 1988 he was a staff member of the New York Botanical Garden
and during that time conducted a series of botanical expeditions in Brazilian
Amazonia. He has published 8 books and over 180 scientific and general articles
on plant systematics, plant ecology, ethnobotany and conservation. He is author
of four previous monographs in Flora Neotropica: Chrysobalanaceae (1972), Dichapetalaceae
and Rhabdodendraceae (1972) and Caryocaraceae (1973). He is coauthor
of Lecythidaceae with Scott A. Mori (Part I, 1979 and Part II, in press).
He holds a Fil.Dr. (honoris causa) from Goteborg University and is a Fellow of
the Linnean Society of London and the Explorers Club, a corresponding member
of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and a foreign member of the Royal Danish
Academy of Sciences and Letters. He was Executive Director of Flora Neotropica
from 1975 to 1988 and Director of the New York Botanical Garden Institute of
Economic Botany from 1981 to 1988. He is currently Director of the Royal Botanic
Gardens, Kew, Great Britain.
