Systematic Treatment 79
Bahia: Itacare, Estrada do Aeroporto, 28 Feb
1975 (fl), T. S. dos Santos 2935 (holotype, CE-
PEC; isotypes, FHO, NY).
Tree 8 m tall, the young branches glabrous,
conspicuously lenticellate. Leaf lamina oblong,
coriaceous, 12-15 x 4-4.5 cm, cuneate at base,
shortly and abruptly acuminate at apex, the acumen
2-3 mm long, glabrous above except on
midrib, lanate brown-pubescent beneath, appearing
smooth but pubescence covering a deeply
reticulate venation with stomatal crypts, midrib
prominent beneath, slightly impressed and
lanate on basal half above; primary veins 11-13
pairs, slightly prominent beneath, slightly impressed
to plane above; petioles 14-18 mm long,
canaliculate on upper surface, lanate pubescent,
transversely rugose, 2-3 mm thick. Stipules small,
ovate, membranous, caducous. Inflorescences of
terminal and subterminal panicles, densely
crowded, short branched, the rachis and branches
rufous-tomentellous. Bracts caducous, to 5 mm
long, membranous, glabrous; bracteoles caducous,
ca. 1 mm long tomentellous on e : rior.
Receptacle campanulate-turbinate, 4-5 mm long,
rufous tomentellous on exterior, glabrous within
except for deflexed hairs at throat. Calyx lobes
acute, tomentellous on both surfaces. Petals five,
cream, glabrous with ciliate margins. Stamens ca.
30, inserted around a complete circle, far exserted.
Ovary villous-pubescent. Style pilose-tomen-
7. Hirtella L.
Distribution of Hirtella as a whole is shown in Figure 119.
Key to Groups of Hirtella
tose almost to apex, slightly exceeding the filaments.
Fruit not seen.
Distribution (Fig. 107). Known only from two
collections from the forests of Bahia.
Habitat. Littoral forest.
Additional specimen examined. BRAZIL. BAHIA: 22
km E of Ubaitaba, 25 Aug 1979 (st), Mori 12749 (NY).
Local name. oiti.
Couepia longipetiolata is related to the more
southern species C. meridionalis, differing in the
narrower leaves, the much denser inflorescence,
the longer petioles and the glabrous exterior of
the petals. It differs from C. schottii in the longer
petioles, the fewer primary leaf veins, the dense
inflorescence, and the greater number of stamens
inserted around a complete circle. Couepia longipetiolata
is not easily confused with any other
eastern Brazilian species because of its long petioles
and distinctive, densely crowded, shortbranched
inflorescence.
6-53. Couepia pernambucensis Prance, Fl. Neotrop.
Monogr. 9: 256. 1972.
Distribution
(Fig. 111). This species, described
from a single collection from Pernambuco, has
now also been collected in Bahia.
Additional specimen examined. BRAZIL. BAHIA: Una,
Fazenda Sao Rafael, 16 Dec 1968 (fl), T. S. dos Santos
322 (CEPEC, NY).
