1.3 General Aims<br />
To investigate Cyanopica cyanus’s utilisation <strong>of</strong> habitat mosaic at Khonin Nuga, Nor<strong>the</strong>rn<br />
Mongolia after <strong>the</strong> 2009 fire, <strong>and</strong> to investigate <strong>the</strong> <strong>population</strong> <strong>dynamics</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> colony using four<br />
years’ <strong>of</strong> data, <strong>and</strong> how <strong>the</strong>se have been affected by <strong>the</strong> 2009 forest fire.<br />
1.3.1 Objectives<br />
The aim will be achieved by fulfilling <strong>the</strong> following objectives:<br />
1) <strong>Habitat</strong> <strong>use</strong><br />
• Determine C. cyanus’s home range <strong>and</strong> describe <strong>the</strong> habitat mosaic utilised inside <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
home range<br />
• Describe <strong>the</strong> utilisation <strong>of</strong> habitats, plant species utilised, group composition, activities<br />
<strong>and</strong> food items <strong>of</strong> C. cyanus colony following a major forest fire in 2009 <strong>and</strong> one year<br />
post-fire in 2010<br />
2) Populations Dynamics<br />
• Determine frequency <strong>of</strong> nest predation <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> species responsible<br />
• Determine changes in group size from year to year<br />
• Determine changes in group membership<br />
• Determine adult <strong>and</strong> juvenile survival <strong>and</strong> re-sighting rates from 2006 to 2010<br />
• Determine proportion <strong>of</strong> adults remaining in <strong>the</strong> <strong>population</strong> from year to year<br />
• Determine proportion <strong>of</strong> fledglings remaining in <strong>the</strong> <strong>population</strong> from year to year<br />
• Determine proportion <strong>of</strong> adults that breed each year<br />
• Determine proportion <strong>of</strong> successful <strong>and</strong> unsuccessful breeders that remain in <strong>the</strong> colony<br />
one year to <strong>the</strong> next<br />
• Determine pair-bond retention in breeders<br />
• Determine how rapidly colony size recovers following <strong>the</strong> May 2009 fire<br />
